Discover Terrer: Church, Castle and River Landscape

Culture and History

The “Torre y ábside de la Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora” in Terrer is part of the area’s cultural history. It was designated a “Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés” by an order dated 8 July 2002. The tower of the “Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora” church in Terrer dates from the early 15th century, has a square floor plan and consists of two superimposed structures.

Only the tower, apse and some masonry remains inside have survived from the original Mudéjar temple in Terrer. The combination of dating, square floor plan and surviving architectural elements provides several distinct points of reference for the church’s history.

The Castillo de Terrer dates from the 9th century, from the period of Muslim rule, and was in use until the 16th century. It covers approximately 1,500 m² and consists of three stepped, elongated and narrow areas.

Landscape and Paths

The Mirador de Terrer is located beside the ruins of the medieval castle. It offers views of the plain of the Jalón River and the town centre. The Mirador de Terrer can be reached on foot from Calle Cuevas or by vehicle via the slope leading to the municipal depot.

Another point of reference in the town is by the river: Parque del Río in Terrer is a recreational area with tables, pergolas, benches, a fountain and a barbecue area. The path in Parque del Río y Sendero Verde is fully lit and equipped with benches. The viewpoint and riverside area can be treated as different points of reference when planning your own trip.

Festivals and Community

The recurring Santa Bárbara festival is celebrated on 4 December and includes a bonfire and a communal barbecue. The recurring San Gregorio festival is celebrated on 9 May; the festival weekend includes a pilgrimage to a hermitage and the blessing of the fields. The recurring San Pascual festival includes a festival weekend during which the brotherhood cooks white beans for the entire town. Alongside the buildings, the dates and activities place a distinct emphasis on communal festival culture.
