San Juan de Mozarrifar: Sports, Trails and History

Nature and Trails

The GR 234 Camino de la Jorgeada runs in three stages over 76 kilometres from Plaza del Pilar in Zaragoza to the Ermita de San Jorge in Huesca, reaching San Juan de Mozarrifar along the way. The GR 234 reaches the village via a short paved section. In San Juan de Mozarrifar, the Anillo Verde Norte includes a rest area and runs in some sections along agricultural tracks between huertas, as well as on paths beside natural areas.

The hiking trail passing through San Juan de Mozarrifar has been catalogued and inventoried by the Government of Aragon as a tourist resource. Its operator has committed to regular maintenance and to promoting its profile. The 76 kilometres in three stages represent a different time frame from the short paved section; stage length, trail surface and the opportunity to rest can be considered separately when planning. Together with the agricultural tracks between huertas and the paths through natural areas, these create different trail features that cannot be reduced to the same type of route.

Culture

San Juan de Mozarrifar was established as a settlement of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The parish church of San Juan de Mozarrifar is a building from the late 15th century that was remodelled during the Baroque period, in the first half of the 18th century.

San Juan de Mozarrifar was the site of a camp for Republican prisoners, which after the Spanish Civil War was used to detain and classify prisoners before their transfer to other state prisons. The village still has a tradition of artisanal brickmaking.

San Juan de Mozarrifar held patron-saint festivities in 2017 and 2024, as well as in March and June 2025.
