Orés: Nature, Trails and Culture

In the northwest of the Sierra de Luna massif lies Orés’s natural heritage. The densely vegetated mountains are characterised by pine trees, oaks and holm oaks.

Nature and Trails

Pico del Fragal reaches an altitude of 825 metres and is the geodetic vertex between Orés, El Frago and Luna. The Mirador de la Atalaya is located on the hill above Orés and offers views of the Sierra de Santo Domingo, the Bardenas and Moncayo.

A viewpoint in the municipality of Orés is located on former threshing floors, where grain was once threshed.

The “Orés – El jardín de los dioses” route leads through the valley of the Río Ores with riparian woodland, aromatic plants and wild orchids. As an ethnobotanical hiking trail, it combines experiences of nature with Greek mythology.

The PR-Z101 hiking trail leads from Asín through Orés and over El Fragal to El Frago. In Orés, there are routes for cycling and paths for hiking. The different routes and themes can be considered separately for your personal daily planning.

Church Art and History

The centre of Orés is known for its stone buildings.

The Church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque structure and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century.

The Church of San Juan Bautista houses the Gothic Hispano-Flemish altarpiece of the Virgen del Rosario.

The church preserves the 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgen de la Pardina, transferred from the hermitage of the same name; it was restored in 1981. It also preserves the statue of the Virgen de Yérzol.

The altarpiece associated with the Virgen de la Pardina is a significant work from the second quarter of the 15th century and belongs to the International Gothic style. The Virgen de la Pardina is a Romanesque Madonna and Child figure in a seated Sedes Sapientiae composition.

Remains of a Roman road are located next to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Pardina.

Traditions and Festivals

The Orés Mágico magic festival has been held in Orés every June for more than a decade; during the festival, the streets of Orés become a stage for nationally and internationally renowned magicians.

The Subida del Mayo tradition involves cutting down the tallest poplar tree in the village and setting it up in a square.

The May pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen de Yérzol includes the distribution of blessed bread as well as the tasting of homemade pastries and wine.

The access road to Orés branches off the A-1204 at the Asín-Orés junction onto the CV-813.

The Torre de Siera, also known as Castillo de Siera, is located in the Val de Siera in the municipality of Orés, near the village on private property. The substantially altered structure retains a lordly character.
