Discover Fayón: History, Waterways and Holiday Apartments

Fayón focuses on two themes: the history of the Spanish Civil War and trails by the water. Catalogued as an Aragonese tourist hiking trail, PR-Z 160: Ruta de la Ermita del Pilar runs along the shore of the reservoir and passes the bell tower rising from the water below the ruins of Castell de Faió.

Nature

Another hiking trail is PR-Z 161: Vuelta a la Ermita de San Jorge. The 16-kilometre circular route is catalogued as an Aragonese tourist hiking trail and connects to the Camino Natural del Ebro.

On the water, El Llaüt de Fayón offers guided trips on the Matarraña River and at its confluence with the Ebro, conveying the history of old Fayón along the way. The route operated by El Llaüt de Fayón begins and ends at the Embarcadero de la Reixaga in Fayón.

Some of these guided trips include a stop at the Castillo. There, visitors can explore the remains of a fortress dating from the 14th century and situated on a hill. The bell tower of old Fayón can also be reached by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. The different types of routes and activities can be weighed up side by side according to the nature of the route and your personal schedule for the day.

The options differ mainly in terms of mode of transport and daily structure: a circular route follows a set course, a boat trip connects a starting point and an endpoint while conveying local history, and kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding offers its own way of accessing the bell tower. This places hiking, guided experiences and movement on the water side by side.

History

In connection with the Museo Fayón Ebro 1938. La Batalla, guided excursions are offered to the trenches near Fayón. The museum displays models, contemporary documents and posters, as well as rifles, cartridges, bayonets, uniforms and material dropped from aircraft. The permanent exhibition also includes a representative camp with radio equipment, a canteen, command post, guard post, bunker and field hospital.

The historical re-enactment of the Battle of the Ebro takes place every year and includes around 300 re-enactors, as well as boats, aircraft, cavalry and historical vehicles. Posición nº36 has a completely circular structure, which is considered unusual in the military architecture of the Spanish Civil War.

Culture

The Espacio María Pilar Burges in Fayón displays 80 works by the first woman to earn a doctorate in Fine Arts in Aragon. In Fayón, a tasting of extra virgin olive oil is offered as part of a project supported by the Cooperativa Agraria San Sebastián and the Asociación de Empresarios y Emprendedores de Fayón. The art and olive oil tasting add a cultural dimension distinct from the military history exhibitions and traces in the landscape.
