Vera de Moncayo – Culture and Nature at Moncayo

Vera de Moncayo lies in the valley of the Huecha River. Vera de Moncayo is located at the foot of Moncayo; the first foothills of the Sierra del Moncayo are situated to the southwest.

Culture

The Castillo de Vera de Moncayo is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and as an archaeological zone.

The archaeological site of La Oruña lies on a hill opposite the entrance to the Monasterio de Veruela. Remains of a smelting furnace can be found on the eastern slope of La Oruña; there is also evidence of further furnaces that may have been used to produce weapons from iron extracted from Moncayo. An acropolis with a well-planned urban layout is located on the upper part of the hill of La Oruña.

At the Centro de Interpretación «La Oruña» in Vera de Moncayo, a reconstruction of a Celtiberian house, together with explanatory panels and an animated video, provides insights into the nearby settlement.

The Iglesia parroquial de la Natividad houses the San Bernardo altarpiece, a work by the sculptor Arnao de Bruselas that originally stood in the Cistercian monastery of Veruela. The church has a single nave, a polygonal apse and rib vaults.

Things to do

The Monasterio de Veruela offers both guided and self-guided visits. Twelve signposted routes known as “Los caminos de Veruela” can be explored in the area around the Monasterio de Veruela.

An approximately 8 km-long literary, historical and natural route through the cultural landscape of Moncayo runs through Vera de Moncayo and Trasmoz, with extensions to Oruña and Litago. The GR 260 “Vuelta al Moncayo-Calcenada” is a 60.20-kilometre circular route around the Moncayo massif that can be completed on foot, on horseback or by bicycle.

Festivals and Wine

On the second weekend of August, Vera de Moncayo holds its patron saint festivities in honour of Santa Brígida, featuring a performance by the “cipotegato”.

A traditional tractor procession takes place in Vera de Moncayo on 15 May for the feast of San Isidro.

The Museo del Vino of the D.O. Campo de Borja can be accessed from the Monasterio de Veruela and offers courses in oenology and viticulture as well as introductory wine-tasting courses.
