Lituénigo between Mudéjar Church, Festivals and Moncayo
The Iglesia de la Purificación de Nuestra Señora in Lituénigo is a Mudéjar church dating from the mid-17th century. It was built on the site of a Romanesque predecessor dating from the early 13th century; remains of this older building have been preserved in the west wall and the lower part of the tower. The town's historic heritage also includes the Castillo de Lituénigo, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
Culture
The Museo de la vida rural “Jesús Hernández” houses more than 200 objects in a permanent exhibition. These include agricultural tools and household items that belonged to Jesús Hernández Martínez. Another historic landmark is the 13th-century Ermita de San Miguel. It was renovated and now serves as the town hall, housing additional public and cultural services.
Further town pages expand the regional selection: Osera De Ebro, Quinto, Jaraba, Ibdes, Villarroya de la Sierra, Almonacid de la Sierra, Encinacorba and Gallocanta.
Festivals
During the Pesaje de los Niños, children under one year old are weighed against wheat on a Roman threshing scale. The wheat received is then auctioned. The festival is connected with rituals of weighing wheat and offerings that farmers have made to Saint Michael since the 13th century.
The Feria de los Oficios Perdidos takes place on the first Saturday in July and is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón. In Lituénigo, more than 40 traditional occupations are demonstrated, including spinning, washing clothes, soap making, blacksmithing, stonemasonry, basket weaving, pottery and beekeeping. The town's attractions therefore represent a range of different themes: sacred architectural history, rural crafts and traditional customs.
Landscape
Part of the municipality of Lituénigo lies within the Parque Natural de la Dehesa del Moncayo. Around the middle of August, the Romería a la Virgen del Moncayo takes place, with people walking from Lituénigo to the sanctuary.
As part of this Romería, the municipality invites visitors to a typical breakfast of migas and chorizo. Mass is held at 12 noon, after which the town gathers in the meadow of San Gaudioso for traditional games for all ages.
In the vicinity of Lituénigo is the Bishop Palace, a palace. The Monasterio de Veruela, a monastery, is also nearby. The Cathedral Tarazona is a church in the vicinity of Lituénigo. The Sierra del Moncayo is also a mountain range near the town.
In the wider region around Lituénigo is the Mirador de Ablitas, a viewpoint. Santa María De La Caridad is located there as a monastery. The Sierra Tablado and the Sierra de Toranzos are mountain ranges in the wider region around Lituénigo.
