Gallocanta is closely associated with the Laguna de Gallocanta. The lagoon is a saline, endorheic body of water in a large basin of the Sistema Ibérico and lies at an altitude of 990 metres above sea level. For an initial overview, you can consider the type of water body, elevation and landscape area separately.
Nature
The Laguna de Gallocanta is a stopover and wintering area for numerous bird species; more than 220 different species have been recorded there. During the migration of cranes (Grus grus), an estimated 80 percent of the species' western population stops in Gallocanta. Gatherings of more than 60,000 birds have been recorded.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Laguna de Gallocanta has been renovated and equipped with a modernised museography and new interpretive offerings. The Museo de las Aves de Gallocanta is housed in a single-storey building and presents the most important bird families.
Nature can be viewed from several perspectives: as a body of water, as an area for various bird species, as a seasonal setting for crane migration, and as a subject of exhibition and interpretation. For your planning, you can distinguish between the broad range of species and the seasonally occurring crane migration.
Trails and Observation
The trail network of the Laguna de Gallocanta protected area includes the PR-Z 33 Laguna de Gallocanta y Los Lagunazos hiking trail. The accessible Centro de visitantes de Gallocanta is located in Gallocanta, outside the protected area and its peripheral protection zone. The Observatorio accesible de Gallocanta is one of the observation points at the Laguna de Gallocanta.
The hiking trail, observation point and visitor centre each have a different focus. You can consider hiking, observing and gathering information separately when making your own plans.
Culture
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol was built in the first half of the 17th century; the completion of the construction work could be dated to 1735. It has three naves and a Latin-cross floor plan.
A small chapel beneath the gallery of the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol houses the image of the Virgen del Buen Acuerdo.
The Ermita de la Virgen del Buen Acuerdo de Gallocanta stands on a small rise about two kilometres from the centre of Gallocanta, on the far side of the lagoon. It dates back to a Romanesque building from the early 13th century.
The Festival de las Grullas takes place in Gallocanta on the first weekend of February. The buildings are also associated with different periods. When planning your own trip, you can consider sacred architecture, the image, the Romanesque origins and the festival date as separate cultural topics alongside one another.
For a holiday apartment in Gallocanta, you can compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective listing pages. These three details can be checked separately from the nature and cultural topics and provide a clear framework for planning your own trip.
Other destinations in the same overview include Fuentes De Ebro, Valareña, Cosuenda, Sos Del Rey Católico, Pinseque, San Juan De Mozarrifar, Alhama De Aragón and Calatorao.
