Saragossa: Mudejar Art, Roman History and Trails along the Ebro

The Mudejar Architecture of Aragon UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the tower and parish church of San Pablo de Zaragoza. The Basílica del Pilar houses works by Goya, more than ten chapels, an organ and a 16th-century alabaster altarpiece. The Palacio de la Aljafería is considered one of the outstanding achievements of Hispano-Muslim art and the northernmost Islamic palace in Europe. Its Mirhab was built in the 11th century as a mosque or private oratory for the Muslim king and his court and is oriented towards Mecca. The church interior, palace and archaeological museums focus on different aspects of cultural history: the Basílica displays works of art and furnishings, the Mirhab refers to its function as a mosque or private oratory, and the Ruta leads to Roman public buildings in the political centre.

History

The Ruta de Caesaraugusta is a tour through the political centre and public buildings of Roman Zaragoza. It includes four archaeological museums: the Forum, the river port, the public baths and the theatre. The Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta is located beneath the present-day Plaza de la Seo. The Museo del Puerto Fluvial preserves monumental remains of a Roman port that belonged to the Forum and dates from the late 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The route thus leads from political spaces to public facilities and to a port structure from different periods of the city's Roman history.

Nature

Parque del Agua Luis Buñuel is an approximately 120-hectare urban park with extensive green spaces, services and activities. More than 15 kilometres of cycle paths run through the park. More than 30 activities are also available, including horse riding, canoeing, rafting, multi-adventure activities, bicycle hire and spa facilities. The Ebro runs through Zaragoza for 10 kilometres; its banks offer almost 20 kilometres of a nature and monumental trail for walking or cycling. The Camino Jacobeo del Ebro also passes through Zaragoza. The cycle paths run through the urban park, while the nature and monumental trail along the banks of the Ebro is a walking or cycling route; the Camino Jacobeo del Ebro complements these specific forms of trail with a route that passes through Zaragoza.

Cuisine

The tapas route in Zaragoza combines tapas eaten standing at the counter of a bar or restaurant with visits to museums, monuments and other sights in the historic centre. In central Zaragoza, there are Thursday tapas initiatives such as “Juepincho” in the Magdalena-Heroísmo district and “Los jueves toreros” around the Coso de la Misericordia.
