La Muela: Old Town, Museums and Wind Turbines

Culture

The Iglesia de San Clemente is a Gothic church from the 16th century with a three-part, square Mudéjar tower. Its tower was classified in 2002 as a Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés. The Palacio de las Torres de La Muela is a Gothic building from the late 15th century; only its façade, bearing the coat of arms of the Torres family, has survived.

The Ermita de San Antonio Abad is a Baroque religious building from the 18th century and was built in 1701. The route there is marked by several peirones decorated with ceramics from Muel and Manises, representing the Stations of the Cross.

History

The Nevero is a restored ice or snow storehouse, more than 300 years old and six metres deep. It can be entered via a staircase down to its deepest point; it can be visited by prior appointment with the municipal administration offices.

Museums

The Museo de la Vida deals with the origins and development of the planet and the various species living on it. It is located in an unusual dragonfly-shaped building. The Museo del Aceite is housed in a restored oil mill that operated until 1946. It is located in the centre of La Muela next to a 1,300-year-old olive tree.

In La Muela, the Museo del Viento is surrounded by extensive landscaped green spaces. The Parque de los Pozos includes restored wells that were built from the 18th century onwards.

Annual Cycle

The Cabezo de la Cruz archaeological site in the municipality of La Muela contains traces of settlement from the Epipalaeolithic, the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (9th to 6th century BC). The patron-saint celebrations in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua take place in the first half of June; the pilgrimage to the Virgen de la Sagrada takes place on the first Sunday in May.
