Alborge: Holiday Apartments, Mills and Ebro Trails

Alborge reveals itself through water engineering, religious architecture, river landscapes and traditional customs. Technical installations, historic buildings, paths along the Ebro and firmly established annual events give the town several clearly distinct facets.

Culture

The hydraulic complex of Alborge consists mainly of a weir, a grain mill and a noria water wheel, and was built in the 16th century. The mill machinery and the mill wheel used to grind the grain have been preserved in the complex. The interior of the restored grain mill can be visited by prior appointment with Alborge Town Council.

The Nevera of Alborge is sunk into sandstone and covered with a masonry dome. Its round shaft has a diameter of 5 metres and is 12 to 15 metres high. The ruins of Alborge Castle lie on a hill on the western edge of the town. They consist of masonry with a rectangular ground plan measuring approximately 30 by 15 metres.

The Iglesia de San Lorenzo has a Latin-cross floor plan, a single-nave layout, seven chapels and a tower integrated into the lower section of the façades. The church was built in 1686 on the initiative of Rueda Monastery; its tower was completed in 1797.

History

An important historical reference dates back to 1166: Pedro Capalbo and his successors were granted a quarter of the territory of Alborge. The conditions included the construction of a weir, irrigation channels and a castle.

Landscape

From Alborge, the GR99 follows an unpaved path along the Ebro and loops around its meanders.

In the surroundings of Alborge, a riverside path leads to a former ferry crossing whose history dates back to 1336 and which led to Cinco Olivas. The path provides access to riverside woodland and, via a small bridge, to a mejana, meaning a river island.

The Mirador de las Tres Aguas offers views of the river and the mill weir. The unpaved GR99, the riverside path and the viewpoint each provide a different focus for planning days by the river.

Traditions

The old olive mills of Alborge bear witness to a long-standing tradition of olive oil production. The best-preserved historic olive mill is located in the lower part of Alborge, retains some of its machinery as well as the original presses, and was built in 1775.

Every year on 29 April, a pilgrimage to the Virgen de Montler takes place in Alborge. On 10 August, Alborge celebrates its patron saint's festival in honour of San Lorenzo Mártir.

In the first days of December, a public Matacía takes place in Alborge.
