Luesia: Castle, Medieval Streets and the Río Arba

The historic town of Luesia was protected in 2009 as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Historic Ensemble. The Castillo de Luesia stands on a rocky ridge; this monument, also protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest, preserves a pentagonal tower.

Culture

The oldest part of Luesia retains narrow, winding medieval streets. The Iglesia del Salvador has a triple semicircular apse and a double crypt whose origins date back to the late 11th century. In Luesia’s former Jewish quarter, narrow streets, small doors and occasional mezuzahs have been preserved. Luesia is home to the Museo de Arte Religioso San Esteban de Luesia.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Puyal is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. It stands on top of a hill northeast of Luesia’s town centre and outside the town fortifications; it can be reached via a large flight of steps. The main festival of the Ermita de la Virgen del Puyal is celebrated on 8 September.

El Corral de Calvo is an archaeological site with an excavated and protected monumental zone. The monumental zone of El Corral de Calvo dates from around 1025 to 1030. The church of El Corral de Calvo offers an exceptional insight into the art and architecture of the period around the year 1000, before the emergence of Romanesque art.

Nature

The section with the pools lies upstream from Pozo Pigalo on the Río Arba de Luesia and is located within the municipality of Luesia. The pool section of the Río Arba de Luesia comprises three pools along a walk of approximately 20 minutes. Pozo Pigalo is a bathing area between natural pools created by the Río Arba de Luesia in its upper course.

Luesia is one of the municipalities included in the protected natural area of Sierra de Santo Domingo. In summer, prior reservation is required for parking at Pozo Pigalo; access is regulated during this period.

Hiking

PR-Z 119 is a 25.9-kilometre circular hike connecting Luesia with Pozo Pígalo. The trail begins on the road north of Luesia and climbs to the Sierra de Luesia. PR-Z 119 is catalogued and registered as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón. The Luesia tourist office offers guided tours of the town.
