Uncastillo: Fortress, History and Nature
The terrace of the Fortaleza de Uncastillo is the highest point in Uncastillo and offers spectacular views of the townscape and the natural surroundings. A restoration project made it possible to open the Fortaleza to the public after centuries of decline.
Culture
A small museum is located in the keep of the Fortaleza de Uncastillo. The sculpture in the Iglesia de Santa María is attributed to the Maestro de Olorón and adorns the archivolts of the south portal.
The Centro de Arte Religioso del Prepirineo is located in the Romanesque church of San Martín de Tours in Uncastillo and displays a carefully selected collection of medieval sculptures, reliefs, goldsmithing works and paintings.
Built in the second half of the 13th century, the synagogue of Uncastillo included a communal oven, a garden and a columbarium or dovecote; part of the synagogue has been restored.
Outside Uncastillo, the Jewish cemetery preserves around 150 intact graves carved into earth or rock; the funeral procession reached it via the Puente de los Judíos.
History
The Iglesia de San Miguel, fully rehabilitated by the Fundación Uncastillo, was converted into a congress hall. The Lonja was later used for commercial transactions conducted in Uncastillo’s market square.
The Los Bañales archaeological site preserves the ruins of an urban settlement from Roman times, with several villas and public buildings such as baths, a temple, a forum and an aqueduct. The bath complex at Los Bañales preserves three rooms for cold, lukewarm and hot baths, as well as a sauna.
The Museo del Frío in La Poza de Hielo shows how winter ice and snow were stored and preserved for use in other seasons.
Nature
The natural surroundings of Uncastillo are suitable for hiking.
The individual impressions can be weighted differently when planning your own day. You can focus on one area, combine several themes or deliberately keep the visits separate; no fixed sequence is required.
The time available also provides its own framework. Several stops can stand alongside one another, while a single theme can be given more space. The personal arrangement remains open and need neither treat all content equally nor follow a particular order. A change in perspective can be planned just as easily as a deliberate focus.
The places mentioned differ in period, architectural purpose and content, and accordingly open up different topics for planning your own day. For your travel planning, you can therefore decide according to your interests and preferred pace. The themes remain distinct while still being able to stand alongside one another in a personal daily itinerary.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Uncastillo, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can help structure the comparison. This keeps the type of accommodation tied to your own period of travel, while the decision between culture, history and hiking can be made independently of individual local attractions.
