Cerveruela on the Huerva River: Cliffs, Hiking Trails and History

Cerveruela lies in a bend of the Río Huerva at the foot of the Sierra de Peco and is built on rock, giving the village a distinctive setting. Nature and Landscape

The Sabimbre is a white willow (Salix alba). It is 14 metres tall and has a circumference of 860 centimetres at the base of its trunk. The Sabimbre was recognised as a singular tree of Aragon in 2019; the designation is recorded in the Boletín Oficial de Aragón No. 73, dated 15 April 2019. The area around Cerveruela, among poplars and holm oaks, is suitable for walks and hiking routes.

Hiking and Terrain

The GR-90.3 long-distance trail passes through Cerveruela between Paniza and Villareal de Huerva and crosses several mountain ranges of the Iberian System. From Cerveruela, a moderately difficult hike of about one hour leads to the 1,300-metre-high Pico San Bartolomé, the highest point in the Sierra de Peco. The route follows a branch of the GR 90 ibérico whose markings have been lost.

Local History and Religious Sites

At the highest point of the village stands Cerveruela’s parish church, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol and dating from the 18th century.

Cerveruela preserves the Peirón de la Virgen del Pilar. It also has three chapels with images of San José de Calasanz, San Miguel and San Antón.

The Palomar (partida de la Huervecica) was extensively restored from 2009 to 2011 and now serves as a seed bank for traditional and organic varieties. Inside, an information panel explains its original use, the restoration process and its present-day function.

From the bridge over the Río Huerva in the village, the Palomar can be reached via a path of about 150 metres in a west-northwest direction, followed by a further approximately 60 metres northwards.

Annual Events

A pilgrimage to the Santuario de la Virgen del Águila takes place on the first Saturday in May. Cerveruela holds celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Pilar on 12 October.
