Holiday apartment in Tolmin: Gorges, Castle Ruins and Culture

Tolmin combines experiences in nature with castle history and sites of cultural and historical significance. Those wishing to bring different interests together on one trip will find both paths through the river landscape and exhibitions and memorial architecture here.

Nature

The Tolmin Gorges is the collective name for the gorges of the Tolminka and Zadlaščica rivers. At 180 m above sea level, they form the lowest point of Triglav National Park. An easy circular trail leads through the gorges, with steps and railings, as well as a descent and ascent that partly run along a road.

A 1,250 m-long walking path connects the outskirts of Tolmin with the area of the Tolmin Gorges. The terrain is easy, making the path suitable for walkers and hikers of all ages; it takes about 15 minutes on average. Another option is a running route of less than 10 kilometres that is not particularly demanding. It follows the Soča and Tolminka rivers and circles Tolmin. The confluence of the Soča and Tolminka is recommended as the starting point. Tolmin also has a permanently marked running route, described as the first permanently marked running route in Slovenia.

Culture

Kozlov Rob is home to the ruins that are the remains of the most important castle once located in the Tolmin area. The castle ruins are designated as a cultural monument and have been restored as a viewpoint since the 1990s. From there, visitors can enjoy views over the Tolmin basin and the surrounding hills. The Kozlov Rob Interpretation Centre presents the history of the castle in a multimedia “Immersive Room”.

Guided tours along the Three Castles Trail combine a walk with an introduction to the cultural heritage of Kozlov Rob, Coronini Palace and the Patriarch’s Court in Dvor na Doru. Kozlov Rob also offers a playfully guided experience aimed primarily at families. The site includes a renovated fitness trail with outdoor fitness equipment and wooden exercise elements.

The Tolmin Museum is located in the former Coronini Palace in the centre of Tolmin. The permanent exhibition “The Soča Region Historical Deposits” presents archaeological finds from Most na Soči, particularly from the Early Iron Age. The ethnological and historical section of the exhibition covers the Great Tolmin Peasant Revolt of 1713.

The German Ossuary near Tolmin is a cultural and historical as well as architectural monument built in 1938. In its chapel, the names of fallen soldiers are displayed on oak panels and in mosaic inscriptions; the tomb of the unknown soldier is located in the burial chamber. The German Ossuary stands on the left bank of the Soča in the immediate vicinity of Tolmin. The road there leads from Tolmin for approximately 1 km past the school centre. Interior visits are possible from Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 and 15:00 by prior arrangement with the Tolmin Museum; groups can request a guided tour in advance.

Routes

From Tolmin, follow the signposts to Javorca. Behind the village of Zatolmin begins a 7 km-long, narrow gravel road with passing places, suitable only for passenger cars. From the car park below Javorca, a 15- to 20-minute uphill walk then leads to the Church of the Holy Spirit.
