Čiginj – Memorial Sites, the Path of Peace and Climbing

Čiginj brings memorial sites, historic routes and climbing together into a local history revealed through tangible traces and activities. For you, the distinctive features of the place can be understood in three ways: remembrance, trails and climbing.

Culture and Remembrance

The Čiginj memorial to the fallen fighters of the National Liberation Army (NOV) and the victims of wartime violence is classified as a memorial-heritage site.

The Znamenje pri Ušniku in Čiginj is protected at its authentic location.

As part of the “Nomen est omen” project, marble plaques bearing the names of farmsteads were installed on 70 houses in Čiginj; this made Čiginj the first village in Slovenia to do so.

The Čiginj memorial to the National Liberation Army (NOB) was erected in 1969 and consists of a torch-shaped concrete column with five plaques naming villages, as well as additional plaques bearing the names of the fallen.

Coming from Nova Gorica towards Tolmin, this NOB memorial stands behind Čiginj and shortly before Volče, opposite the Gostol factory, on the right-hand side of the road.

When choosing a location, you can distinguish between individual memorial markers, a named farmstead-history tradition and a distinctly designed monument.

Trails and Hiking

The Path of Peace (Pot miru) to Mengore starts at the NOB memorial on the rise along the road between Volče and Čiginj.

The Pot miru route to Mengore passes cleared Austro-Hungarian defensive positions of the Soča Front.

The route to Mengore from the Volče–Čiginj road is somewhat more demanding and is an unmarked path.

A footpath also leads from Čiginj via Laze, past a waterfall, through Krasja and Dol, and over Sleme to Benečija.

For planning your day, it is useful to distinguish between a historically oriented trail and a sequence of named landscape features.

The trails differ clearly in their layout: the Pot miru connects a named starting point with historic positions, while the path from the Volče–Čiginj road remains unmarked and somewhat more demanding. The footpath via Laze, in turn, follows a sequence of place and landscape names to Benečija, creating its own route alongside the access path to Mengore.

Climbing

The Pri Čiginju climbing area in Čiginj (Tolmin) has 45 routes graded from 4c to 7c.

From the car park, the foot of the Pri Čiginju climbing wall can be reached on foot in about five minutes by crossing a field to the edge of the forest.

The Pri Čiginju climbing area features high-quality white limestone.

The climbing option complements the historic trails and memorial sites with a sporting way to explore the place.
