Kobarid: Soča, History and Alpine Traditions

Kobarid combines the history of the Soča region with trails, water and alpine traditions. The Kobarid Historical Trail is a five-kilometre hiking trail that connects historical, cultural, archaeological and natural sights in the vicinity of Kobarid. Nature and Trails

Slap Kozjak, also known as Veliki Kozjak, is the highest waterfall on the Kozjak stream and is 15 metres high. It can be reached via a maintained footpath. On the Walk of Peace, the Bovec–Kobarid stage ends in the centre of Kobarid. A cycle path runs along the Nadiža from Kobarid via Robič to Podbela. Culture and History

The Kobarid Museum presents the 12th Battle of the Isonzo Front, also known as the “Miracle of Kobarid”, in a collection spread across twelve rooms on two floors. A multimedia room shows a short film about the Isonzo Front that describes the 12th Battle of the Isonzo Front in greater detail. The Kobarid Museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize. The Italian Charnel House contains the remains of more than 7,100 soldiers who fell in the Upper Soča region during the First World War. The historical sites can be distinguished by collection, film and ossuary.

Alpine Pastures, Cheese and Regional Cuisine

The historical ethnological collection “Od planine do Planike” presents the heritage of the alpine pastures and the tradition of cheese-making in the Soča region. With ethnological exhibits, a documentary film and a reconstruction of an alpine hut with complete equipment for processing milk, the collection also conveys the heritage of alpine pastoral farming. At the Cheese Museum Kobarid, the dairy organises cheese and other dairy product tastings, as well as an alpine farm meal for private groups, by prior reservation.
