Vremski Britof: Culture, Reka Gorge and Trails through the Vremska Valley

Vremski Britof combines significant sacred and architectural heritage with a river landscape in which hiking trails, farmsteads and cycling routes are closely connected to the cultural character of the place. Culture

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is originally a Gothic church from the 15th century and was remodeled in the Baroque style in the 17th century. Its Gothic chancel is decorated with frescoes from the second half of the 15th century, which are considered to be of exceptional quality in the Slovenian region. The church was a pilgrimage church at a crossroads: here, the road to the Brkini Hills met the road along the Reka River, which led from the coast into the interior.

The former coachmen’s inn, protected as a monument because of its outstanding stonework details, is also part of the historic villagescape. The Ravnikar shop and post office was designed in 1978 in a former farmhouse with an outbuilding and courtyard next to the village church. The project was Vojteh Ravnikar’s first major completed project; the exterior can be viewed at any time. At the Dekleva House, the Makseln portal is regarded as a symbol of the family’s former prosperity.

Farmsteads and Wine

A beautifully renovated mill can be seen at the 400-year-old Žagar estate. For groups, guided tours of the sawmill and mill, as well as a multimedia presentation of the estate, can be organized by prior arrangement. This presentation takes place in a stone-vaulted wine cellar dating from 1588.

Agricultural traditions are also associated with visits arranged in advance. By prior arrangement, the Biščak family farm can organize tastings and a tour of the farm and orchards for groups. Tastings can also be organized at the Morelj fruit farm.

River Landscape

The Notranjska Reka flows between Vremščica and the Brkini Hills before disappearing into the Škocjan Caves. The Reka River Gorge begins between Škoflje and Vremski Britof and is approximately three kilometers long. A well-maintained hiking trail runs along the gorge.

The Magajna Trail passes through Vremski Britof. It is marked with a stylized portrait of Brkonja Čeljustnik, a literary character created by Magajna.
