The Teran Circular Trail starts in Dutovlje, on the square in front of the Bunčeta Homestead. The trail follows easy forest and village paths past numerous vineyards and offers views of vineyards, dry-stone walls and stone villages. The circular trail takes 2 to 3 hours and is considered easy. Its starting point, route, duration and difficulty give this trail a clearly defined format between village paths, vineyards and the Karst landscape.

Nature and Trails

South of Dutovlje, towards the Žekenc and Volnik hills, there are meadows, pastures, common land and forest. East of Dutovlje, towards the village of Skopo, the landscape is characterised by pastures, forest and cultivated Karst dolines. Pepa’s gardens also reflect the typical Karst landscape. At Pepa’s Karst Garden, traditional materials from local crafts are combined with typical Karst plants. Designed garden spaces thus stand alongside the natural forms and materials characteristic of the Karst.

Culture and History

The village settlement of Dutovlje is classified as settlement heritage. The Church of Saint George stands in the centre of the old village core. During the Ottoman incursions, it was fortified with a surrounding wall and four towers. Another feature of the village landscape is the Dutovlje village well, into which a Christogram and a heart dating from 1848 were carved.

Near Dutovlje lies the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery in a doline south of the village. It contains the graves of 1,374 Austro-Hungarian soldiers. From Dutovlje, the cemetery can be reached via the main road towards Kreplje; after just over 400 metres, a field path branches off behind the civilian cemetery to the nearby doline.

Pepa’s History Garden won a gold medal in the Artisan Gardens category at the Chelsea Flower Show in London in 2012. The Bunčeta estate also houses an authentic memorial room dedicated to Boris Pahor. Pepa’s gardens at the Bunčeta estate in Dutovlje are open to the public.

Wine and Local Traditions

At the Štok Wine Cellar, visitors can taste Teran, Malvasia, Teran liqueur and other wines, as well as visit the cellar and vineyards. For the 54th Teran and Prosciutto Festival, visitors were scheduled to be able to taste Karst prosciutto and Teran.
