Štanjel places the Karst at the centre in a special way: in interactive museums, historic building forms, art and landscapes that make stone, wind and geological features tangible. Culture

At Štanjel Castle Museum, an interactive exhibition provides insights into the culture and natural richness of the Karst. The exhibition “Nature and People in the Karst” conveys the Karst landscape through sensory experiences with Karst stone, wind and geological features. The Kraška hiša museum collection offers a different approach; it is dedicated to the material folk culture of the Karst. It is housed in a building that is probably one of the oldest in Štanjel and illustrates the architectural features of original Karst houses from the Romanesque and Gothic periods.

Language, books and visual art also have their own place. The Museum of the Slovenian Language and Books presents the development of the Slovenian language and the book through seven interactive experiences. The Lojze Spacal Gallery is dedicated to an artist who drew inspiration from motifs from the Karst and Istria and transformed them into his own visual language. At the Štanjel Castle Visitor Centre, you will receive information about the tourism programmes taking place in Štanjel, as well as the range of tourist offerings in the Karst and Slovenia.

History

St Daniel’s Church is a Gothic church dating from the middle of the 15th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque period and furnished with important stone altars. Its distinctive bell tower is possibly the best-known symbol of Štanjel. Another prominent site is the renovated Natalijina hiša: it serves as the new entrance and interpretation centre of the Ferrari Garden, combines a permanent exhibition with interpretive content and also includes an inviting space for local residents, creatives and visitors.

Landscape

In Štanjel, the landscape appears not only as a geological backdrop, but also as the content of the exhibition and as the geographical setting. The Monte Lanaro mountain and Monte Coste mountain are located in the vicinity of Štanjel. The wider regional area also contains several places with different focal points: the Vedetta d'Italia viewpoint, the Vedetta Alice viewpoint, the Immaginario Scientifico museum, Castello di Miramare and the historic site of the Roman fortress of Castra. The historic site of Dolina Dei Druidi is also located in the vicinity of Štanjel.

The scheduled events include the Praznik vina wine festival: it took place in Štanjel on 9 November 2024.
