Komen: Church, Karst Trails and Holiday Apartments

Komen begins with a remarkable architectural detail: St. George’s Church preserves a Gothic choir whose stonework dates its construction to around 1470.

Culture

The interior of the church is considered an early example of Venetian late Baroque classicism in the area of the former Diocese of Gorizia. Clemente del Neri painted it between 1898 and 1901.

The dating of the choir and the later interior painting mark two clearly distinct layers of time within the same church interior. Medieval architecture and a distinctly later artistic design thus meet without the individual periods losing their distinct identities.

The history of the settlement is also connected with travel: In the period between the two world wars, Komen was an important tourist centre and attracted holidaymakers as well as Sunday excursionists from Trieste, Tržič and even Venice.

Culinary delights

At Špacapanova Hiša, the focus is on local Karst varieties and natural wine production without added yeast or sulphur. Meat products are cured, cheese is matured, grapes are cultivated and wine is produced there. At Kraška hiša, fresh ingredients from the Karst and the Adriatic coast are used every day.

The two houses therefore have different emphases: at Špacapanova Hiša, processing, maturation, viticulture and natural wine production stand side by side, while Kraška hiša combines its cuisine with fresh ingredients from two areas of origin. The Karst and the Adriatic coast thus appear in different culinary contexts.

Hiking and Nature

The “Čez kraške travnike in vasi” route begins in Komen and heads towards Štanjel. It runs through Gozdni park Cirje, is 11 km long and takes 3 to 4 hours.

The combination of route length and duration provides a clear basis for comparison when weighing up different activity days. The route connects a starting point in Komen with a specified direction and a named park; its length and duration provide a clear framework for the day without prescribing a particular itinerary.

Cycling

The GEOMOB project comprises a regional cycling connection between Sežana and Komen; it was built in 2023. The connection is 19.93 km long.

Along this cycling connection, locations for covered rest areas with benches, and in some cases tables, are planned. Bicycle parking facilities are also planned.

A guided cycling and culinary tour from Mirenski Kostel leads through a varied Karst landscape with dry-stone walls, vineyards and numerous olive groves. It is 90 km long, takes 4 hours and 45 minutes of actual cycling time without breaks, and has a difficulty rating of 3 out of 5.

The different route lengths, time specifications and types of activity make the offerings readable as different forms of day planning without committing them to a single pace of travel. The GEOMOB connection between Sežana and Komen is a separate regional project with a specified length and planned rest and bicycle parking facilities. The guided tour differs from it in its starting point at Mirenski Kostel, its landscape features and its stated actual cycling time without breaks.
