Holiday apartment in Šalovci – culture, nature and cycling routes

Šalovci combines local history with landscapes and routes that can be identified by specific names. Between the spring, mills, protected nature, cycling routes and local event culture, a diverse picture of the place emerges.

Culture

The Frimov vodnjak is a developed natural water spring. It stands on the road between Šalovci and Markovci in Frim Forest and was built around 1850 by the Frim noble family.

The Solarjev mlin is the oldest building in Šalovci and has been partially preserved. The mill was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It received its water from the Krka; a water channel ran alongside the mill.

The Vaški zvonik Šalovci was built in the 19th century by the evangelical community of that time. Today, the bell tower is classified as immovable cultural heritage of local importance.

In Goričko Landscape Park in the municipality of Šalovci, visitors can visit the Žido-Lenaršičev mlin. It has the only still-functioning wood-gas-powered engine in Slovenia. By arrangement with the owner, this engine can be started for visitors.

Nature

The valley of the Velika Krka and its tributaries are designated as ecosystemic, hydrological and zoological natural assets. They belong to the Natura 2000 protected area and Goričko Landscape Park.

Near Križevci, the artificial Križevsko Lake lies on a stream and covers approximately 2 hectares. The lake is particularly popular with anglers.

Cycling routes

The Volčin-Budinci-TNC-Volčin route is considered less demanding and is also suitable for families. It leads from the centre of Volčin via Budinci to TNC Peterloug and back to Volčin.

The EuroVelo 13 route runs through Šalovci on the section from Martinje to Pince. This asphalt route is 66 km long.

Local tradition

“Kapüstni den” is held permanently at the Volčin event venue in the centre of Šalovci. The event has been held in the village of Šalovci since 2002.

At the 21st “Kapüstni den”, competition teams from the municipality of Šalovci and the surrounding area compete in cooking Segedin; they also present other cabbage dishes.
