Holiday apartment in Murska Sobota – culture and cycling tours
Murska Sobota combines impressive cultural sites with paths along the Mura River, an extensive castle park and a variety of outdoor activities. What is particularly characteristic is the interplay of Pomurje’s history, modern interpretation, cycling tours and regional culinary delights.
Culture
The Pomurje Museum Murska Sobota is housed in a Renaissance castle in the city park. Its permanent exhibition illustrates the Mura River and its mills, mineral waters and various agricultural methods. It also features archaeological finds relating to prehistoric communities, the Pomurje region during the Roman Empire and Slavic settlement. Natural surroundings, everyday history and regional development thus come together in a single cultural presentation.
The religious buildings also give Murska Sobota a distinctive historical profile. St. Nicholas Church is first mentioned in 1297. The central Protestant complex, including the church, was built between 1907 and 1910 in the Neo-Gothic style according to plans by Ernő Gerey. The Park Theatre Murska Sobota represents contemporary culture: throughout the year, it hosts numerous theatre, music, dance, film and other events for different target groups.
Nature
Murska Sobota City Park is a castle park covering around 9.5 hectares, surrounding the former Szapary Castle. The park is also home to 19 stone lithopunctures by Marko Pogačnik. This brings together a historic park landscape and distinctive artistic design in the same urban space.
Activities
Fazanerija Recreation Park has a fitness trail with 18 stations. The park also has walking and hiking trails that are suitable for Nordic walking. EXPANO at Lake Soboško on the outskirts of Murska Sobota focuses on something different. The pavilion presents Pomurje’s tourism, nature, crafts and cultural heritage in a unique exhibition featuring innovative technology; a motor skills park is located next to the EXPANO pavilion.
For further outdoor activities, PANEXFUN offers archery tag, disc golf, footgolf and paintball. In summer, the Štrk windsurfing club offers beginner and advanced windsurfing courses.
Cycling
The 20-kilometre international European Amazon Cycling Route runs along the Mura River, passing by Murska Sobota and Lendava. Another connection to the surrounding landscape is the cycling tour from Murska Sobota to Goričko. It is moderately difficult, runs along paved and compacted gravel roads, and is unsuitable for families with small children.
The Pot užitka starts in Murska Sobota and is suitable for a family or group cycling trip. This brings together different cycling experiences: an international route along the Mura, a moderately difficult tour to Goričko and a route whose stated suitability explicitly includes family and group cycling trips.
Culinary delights
On Slovenska ulica, the “Sočna vilica” street food festival invites visitors to enjoy dishes, wines from local winemakers, beer and sweet specialities. This culinary event complements the city’s cultural and active sides with regional drinks and a variety of dishes.
