Gornji Petrovci: Churches, Trails and Customs Throughout the Year

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Gornji Petrovci was built on a Romanesque foundation dating from the 13th century. Around the churches, forest trails and seasonal customs, this village offers opportunities to combine cultural impressions with physical activity.

Culture

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands on Nedelski vrh at an elevation of 355 metres. The area was once known for its wine production. Its short Romanesque section from the 14th century and its longer Gothic choir from the 15th century stand out for their artistic stonework details.

The Evangelical Church in Gornji Petrovci was completed and consecrated in 1824. It acquired its present appearance in 1894/95, when it was extended and completely renovated in the Romanesque style. Services are held there at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays.

Hiking

The Pomurska Hiking Trail leads to Gornji Petrovci. Its trail stamp and hiking log are located at the Pindža inn near the Church of the Holy Trinity. The access route is well marked and runs through mixed woodland, in places through pine forest, along soft forest paths and partly on roads.

A hiking route through Goričko connects Moravske Toplice, Gornji Petrovci and Hodoš. Every year on 8 February, Prešeren Day, the Prešeren Hiking Day is organised through the village. In August, a night hike leads to the Church of the Holy Trinity, where shooting stars can be observed.

Cuisine and Customs

The Vrtanek Tourist Association primarily presents grandmothers’ cuisine and received an award for its culinary work at the national level in Ljubljana. On Trinity Day in May or June, the traditional traders’ market “Buča pri Nedeli” is held at the Church of the Holy Trinity.

In autumn, a traditional festival for the blessing of the new wine is held, featuring a St. Martin’s meal and a cultural programme; cooking workshops are also offered. The market, the new-wine blessing and the cooking workshops offer different formats, local traditions and seasonal highlights to consider.
