Holiday apartment in Hodoš: church, observation tower and Hodoško jezero

Hodoš combines a Protestant church history with an observation tower near the Slovenian-Hungarian border, Hodoško jezero and a restored Pannonian well. Between the church, landscape and historical traces, the village reveals several distinctive facets that clearly differ in character. Culture

The present-day Hodoš Protestant Church was completed in 1843. The church houses a mechanical two-manual organ from 1905 with 11 stops. The history of the Protestant parish also includes its special position in Slovenia: it is the country's only Protestant parish in which Protestants continued to adhere to their faith after 1732. The construction period, organ and religious continuity are therefore among the defining cultural traces of Hodoš.

Another distinctive structure is the Hodoš observation tower. The iron construction is approximately 15 metres high and stands near the Slovenian-Hungarian border. Stairs lead to a platform with a covered observation post. From this covered lookout, there is a view across the valley of the Velika Krka. The tower thus combines its architectural form with a clearly identified vantage point over the landscape.

Nature

Hodoško jezero is the centre of several nature-related features. The Vidrin paradiž educational trail runs around the lake. In 2005, an educational trail with information boards, a rest area and a spring with healthy drinking water was also established around Hodoško jezero. Hodoško jezero is also an important habitat for Eurasian otters. The lake, the trail and the facilities along the educational trail together represent the natural side of Hodoš.

History

Another historical trace lies on the road from Hodoš to Dolenci, at the turn-off to Szalafő. An approximately 150-year-old Pannonian well stands there. The six-metre-deep well was built from bricks and wood and restored in 2007. Before the construction of the public water supply, villagers and border guards from a nearby border post used the water from the well in Hodoš. Its location by the road, its Pannonian construction and its documented use are among the distinctive details of this place.
