Podkoren is a listed village with preserved characteristic vernacular architecture. The character of the village is particularly evident in the historic farmhouses and the settlement’s valuable design.

Culture

Several farmhouses from the 17th century with typical Alpine architecture have been preserved in the main part of the village. They have a stone ground floor, a wooden upper floor and a shingle roof. In the upper part of Podkoren, the settlement is distinguished by a design of considerable value in terms of settlement history and architecture. There, farmsteads with distinctive residential architecture line the settlement entrance, which expands into an irregularly shaped square. Podkoren is also home to a commemorative plaque for the famous naturalist and inventor Sir Humphry Davy.

Trails and landscape

A road leads from Podkoren across the Korensko sedlo border pass to Austria. The Podkoren entrance point on the road to Korensko sedlo was renovated in 2024; both the viewing platform and the railing were renewed in the process.

The “Through ‚Stan‘ to Podkoren” trail is 3,700 metres long and leads to an open meadow with views of the mighty Julian Alps. Another trail, “To Podkoren through Leše”, passes through an underpass and comes within a few hundred metres of the centre of Podkoren, with its particularly noteworthy old centre. In Podkoren, visitors can also see the well-known Alpine World Cup ski slope.

Cycling

The “Cycling Trail to Jurež pasture, Vošca, Železnica” begins with a steep climb from Podkoren towards Korensko sedlo and is 16,600 metres long. The Karawanks Cycling Loop runs from Kranjska Gora via Podkoren towards Korensko sedlo and continues via Tromeja and Rateče back to Kranjska Gora. The specific details of each offer show which services are listed, how many people the occupancy applies to and which costs or conditions must be taken into account before booking. This keeps the review focused on the details of the individual offer. For several people, it is also worth checking whether the stated occupancy matches their own travel dates and whether fees or other price components are listed separately.
