Jesenice showcases its history, which is closely connected with ironworking, at several prominent sites. The Slovenian Ironworks Museum dedicates its permanent exhibition to the owners of the ironworks and the history of ironworking in Jesenice. In the former ironworks settlement of Stara Sava, visitors can also see a permanent exhibition on the lifestyle of ironworks families and a reconstruction of a workers' apartment. Remains of the former blast furnace have also been preserved there. The statue of the ironworker in Jesenice symbolizes the city's history, which is closely connected with ironworking.
Culture and history
Historical sites include Kos Manor, which was built in 1521 by Žiga Dietrichstein, a lessee of the House of Habsburg. Exhibitions of fine art and museum exhibitions are occasionally held there. Murova is the oldest settlement in Jesenice; the first records of it date from 1469. A walk through Murova leads through the oldest part of Jesenice.
The churches also preserve different eras. The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Stara Sava was built by the Bucelleni family and consecrated in 1606 by the Bishop of Ljubljana, Tomaž Hren. It is known for its high altar made of black marble. St. Leonard's Church in Jesenice was first mentioned in 1460, built in the Gothic style, and given Baroque features in the 18th century.
Another collection is dedicated to the history of the Earth: the Jože Bedič Geological and Paleontological Collection, owned by the Gornjesavski Museum Jesenice, is considered the largest and most important collection of Paleozoic fossils in Slovenia.
Local culture
The history of everyday life also includes a culinary insight. In a workshop at the Museum of Workers' Culture in Jesenice, visitors roast and grind barley, prepare coffee with milk, and sample the typical workers' breakfast “kofe pa krǝh,” consisting of coffee and bread.
Nature and the wider surrounding region
In the wider surrounding region of Jesenice, Mežakla forms part of Triglav National Park. Walks there offer various natural and cultural attractions in every season. The Partisan hospital on Mežakla was the first Partisan hospital in Gorenjska; it was established in December 1942 on the initiative of the Partisan doctor Dr. Edvard Pohar.
Above Jesenice, in the wider surrounding region, lies Zois Park in Javorniški Rovt. Special plant and tree species, together with three lakes, create a natural landscape there. In May, the sunny slopes of the Karawanks are covered with narrow-leaved narcissi, which locals call “Ključavnice.” Two powerful waterfalls on the Javornik stream are located along the road to Javorniški Rovt.
The memorial park in Plavž is also one of the city's green spaces. It contains more than 200 plant species and offers locals and visitors a peaceful retreat.
Trails, sports and events
A mountain hiking trail leads from Jesenice to Dom Pristava in Javorniški Rovt and offers views of the valley. The Trilobit nature and mining educational trail is also located in the wider surrounding region there. Designed as a circular route, the trail is 10.2 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 873 meters, takes 4 hours and 10 minutes, and has a moderate difficulty level.
A guided tour with a local tourist guide can be reserved for Jesenice. Čufarjevi dnevi are a regular annual event: they take place every November at the Tone Čufar Theatre in Jesenice. Amateur theater groups compete against one another, and six to eight theater performances are presented. Recreational ice skating takes place every weekend at the Podmežakla Sports Hall.
The Jesenice Tourist Information Center is located in the center of Jesenice opposite Jesenice railway station. It provides information about attractions, events, active experiences, timetables, and guided tours.
