Rodine combines religious tradition, the literary heritage of Janez Jalen, an archaeological site from Roman times, and a cycling tour through the lowlands. Fixed annual festival dates, historic buildings, and traces in the landscape give the village several clearly identifiable points of interest.

Culture and history

The pilgrimage gathering at St. Anne in Rodine takes place every year on 26 July; it has been held there since the 15th century. A fixed religious date is therefore one of the visible traditions of the place.

The Baroque church of St. Clement in Rodine, which is visible today, was built in 1692. It is one of the oldest monuments of sacred architecture in this part of Gorenjska. A religious building is said to have stood on the church grounds in the second half of the 10th century.

Literary heritage

The birthplace of Janez Jalen is one of the oldest buildings in the village of Rodine. In 1987, it was declared a cultural monument, and in 1992 it was renovated to establish the museum. An exhibition at the museum presents most of Jalen’s literary estate.

Local craft traditions are also part of the museum programme. Every year, the museum holds the Honey Thread tasting event at the birthplace, featuring various types of honey from local beekeepers. A living museum demonstration is also offered there regularly, during which bread is baked in the open fireplace.

Landscape and archaeology

The Villa rustica at Ključe in the village of Rodine is a characteristic archaeological site from the Roman period of the 2nd century. The rural Roman villa near Ključe was surrounded by walls, and its ground plan can still be recognized in the landscape. The villa lies on the edge of a terrace above the Sava, elevated above a floodplain that was presumably once a marshland or lake.
