Holiday apartment in Sereď – Culture and History on the Váh

Sereď combines prominent reminders of the past with exhibitions, events and a cycle route along the Váh. At the City Museum, the Holocaust Museum, Šintava Fortress and other historic buildings, you will encounter different chapters of the city’s history.

Culture

The Sereď City Museum is located in the former Roman Catholic parish, now known as Fándlyho fara. It has six permanent exhibitions. The main exhibition is dedicated to Šintava Water Castle and displays archaeological finds from the castle courtyard in Sereď. These include ceramics, tiles, valuable glass, weapons, small objects and coins from excavations carried out between 1984 and 1992.

The history of the fortress includes so-called casemates in its bastion. They contain two pairs of gun embrasures, a large vaulted room and three pillars. The structure was built of bricks in the mid-16th century, around 1550. Sereď Castle and Park preserve a surviving part of Šintava Castle, which was created by connecting and rebuilding parts of the former moated castle. The cadastral area of Sereď also contains a protected park area that follows the layout of the former outer Renaissance fortification of Šintava Castle.

Other historic sites include the Jewish ritual bath, the mikveh, which was built in 1904–1905. The Church of St John the Baptist in Sereď was built in 1781 in the Baroque-Classical style and is one of the city’s sights.

Remembrance and Education

The Holocaust Museum in Sereď preserves the memory of the events of the Holocaust that affected Slovak Jews and serves to educate the general public. Its educational work takes place in the authentic rooms of the former labour and later concentration camp. The museum also offers a guided tour or explanation in sign language.

The Sereď City Museum offers the tactile exhibition “Dialogue of Recognition Through Touch” for blind and visually impaired visitors. It uses modern technology, including a 3D model and audio commentary in Slovak and English.

Events

The Seredský Hodový Jarmok regularly takes place in the last third of June, traditionally around St John’s Day. Since 2022, its programme has also included historical and craft-related activities. Since 2015, concerts in the municipal amphitheatre have also been part of the Seredský Hodový Jarmok.

Cycling

A cycle path along the Váh embankment connects the northern and southern parts of Sereď’s cadastral area. This cycle path is part of the Vážska cyklo-magistrála.

Getting There

Sereď can be reached via motorway connections to Bratislava, Nitra and Trnava, as well as by railway.
