Holiday apartment in Šintava on the Váh – history and leisure

Those considering a holiday apartment in Šintava can get to know the town through its historical traces, the banks of the Váh and recurring events. The built-up area of Šintava lies on the left bank of the Váh. Near the crossing of the Váh, a settlement from the Iron Age has been documented at the site.

History and culture

A Great Moravian hillfort centre near Šintava protected the crossing of the Váh and formed the basis for the later medieval water castle. The first documented mention of Šintava Castle dates from 1042. A description from 1423 records the castle as having two curtain walls and three towers. Under the protection of Július Salma, a printing house was established at Šintava Castle in 1573, described as the first printing house in Slovakia.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin in Šintava is a Baroque-Classical building from the second half of the 18th century. The parish of St. Martin is documented as early as 1234, while the church existed by the 12th century at the latest. St. Martin’s Church stands at the highest point of the former hillfort. Its terraces are still visible today along Hradná, Sereďská and Dlhá streets.

The municipal office meeting room in Šintava houses the museum exhibitions ŠINTAVSKÁ IZBA and ŠINTAVSKÍ KOŠIKÁRI. Both exhibitions are open during office hours. A local tradition is Stavanie mája: every year, on the last day of April, local recruits erect a maypole in the village square, accompanied by the sounds of the Šintavanka brass band.

Water and sport

The Lodenica complex on the banks of the Váh is Šintava’s leisure and sports centre. The boathouse of Veslársky klub Šintava is located directly on the Váh and is well equipped for rowing. In addition to children, the club also welcomes adult rowing enthusiasts.

For recreational purposes, the club has two dragon boats. Each can accommodate 20 people as well as a helmsman and a drummer. In the western part of Šintava’s cadastral area, the Váh flows in meanders. There are also bodies of water formed after gravel extraction, which are currently used for unregulated recreation.

Bagrovisko Šintava is an 8.8-hectare carp fishing water near Šintava. Fishing is permitted there year-round, subject to individual closed seasons.

Wine and festivals

The Svätourbanská koštovka is a recurring wine tasting held on the grounds of the Šintavan winery in Šintava. Visitors can taste 20 to 30 wine samples there. At the Svätourbanská koštovka and the Burčiak Party, visitors also have the opportunity to tour the winery’s production facilities.

The Šintavské vinobranie is a recurring harvest festival featuring an allegorical procession, cultural performances and exhibitions of fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Routes

A 21-kilometre leisure route connects Hlohovec and Šintava and runs along the left bank of the Váh. A route with an educational focus is a section of the eastern branch of the Hradná cesta, which runs through the Trnava region.
