Holiday apartment in Matúškovo – Culture and Landscape

Matúškovo is located in southwestern Slovakia in the flat Podunajská nížina lowland and near the Váh River. The Šárd stream flows through the village. Between the waterscape and the rural surroundings, you will encounter numerous traces of sacred and folk history, complemented by a designated cycling route and traditional events.

Landscape

The location in the flat Podunajská nížina lowland defines Matúškovo’s geographical setting. The Váh is nearby, while the Šárd stream flows directly through the village. This means that both the relationship with the larger river and a local watercourse are present within the village area.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque-Classical building constructed from 1781 to 1784 on the site of an older church. Inside is an altarpiece depicting the Nativity of Mary, painted by Than Mór in 1871. The furnishings also include a 19th-century Classical side altar and a pulpit decorated with reliefs of the Evangelists. Opposite the church stands the rectory, built in 1774 and the oldest building in Matúškovo.

A stone folk statue of Saint Vendelín stands along the road towards Diakovce. It dates from the second half of the 19th century and depicts the patron saint of domestic animals. The wayside shrine “Božia muka”, listed as a cultural monument, dates from the first half of the 19th century. Its column chapel has a pointed-arch opening and is crowned with a double cross.

The protected Dom ľudového bývania was built in 1847 and is an example of traditional folk architecture in southwestern Slovakia. Matúškovo also has an evangelical church designed by Ing. arch. Vavrinec Perleczky and ceremonially handed over in 1992. The stone column of the Holy Trinity stands in the village square; it was commissioned by František Lenárt in 1851.

Traditions

An ethnographic exhibition was opened to the public at Dom ľudového bývania in 1984. It presents the way of life of the original population at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as that of Slovaks who immigrated from Dolná zem in 1947. Visitors can view richly decorated furniture, handwoven carpets and other objects from everyday life there. The chronological classification of the lifestyles on display is thus supplemented by specific furniture, textiles and everyday objects.

The youth organization in Matúškovo regularly organizes the traditional cultural event “Stretnutie hudobníkov” at the stadium. The Hodové oslavy take place on 8 September.

Activities

The “Po stopách vodných mlynov” cycling route, also called the “Galantský Cyklookruh”, passes through Matúškovo. The route is 64 km long and bears the number 2210. The two names refer to the same designated route; route number 2210 adds a unique identifier to the name.
