Holiday apartment in Veľký Grob between culture and nature

Veľký Grob lies on the boundary between the northern foothills of the Danubian Lowland and the southernmost part of the Trnava Hills. East of the village, in the Danubian Lowland, lies the Uľanská mokraď wetland area. The cadastral area also contains four peat bogs that offer opportunities for fishing.

Culture and history

The historic character of the village is shaped by several buildings and memorial sites. Pálfiovský kaštieľ was probably built in the second half of the 17th century as the seat of an economic district of a feudal estate and as the residence of the estate administrator. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anne was created in 1771 by expanding an earlier Baroque chapel. It contains an organ from the workshop of Valentín Arnold, an organ builder from Trnava, dating approximately from around 1800.

The Evangelical church was built in 1788 as a Toleration church. In 1936, it was demolished and rebuilt according to a design by the architect M. M. Harminc; the Baroque-Classicist tower from the end of the 18th century was preserved. A monument in Veľký Grob commemorates a total of 41 documented fallen soldiers.

Embroidery and regional influences

Before the First World War, Veľký Grob was a renowned centre of embroidery. The embroidery, the distinctive Veľký Grob folk costume, the painted rooms and hallways, and the architecture of the old houses combine Slovak, Haban, Croatian and Hungarian cultural influences with a distinctive local character. The traditional costume and embroidery of the Evangelical population of Veľký Grob and Čataj are characteristic of these two municipalities through their colours, ornamental decorations and embroidery patterns.

The cultural element “Ornament from Čataj and Veľký Grob” has 2019 as its inscription year. The embroidery ornamentation of Čataj and Veľký Grob was transferred to textile painting and decorates the altar cloths of the Evangelical church. The cultural centre in Čataj is decorated with murals by Mária Bagiová. Among the notable embroiderers and pattern designers in the Veľký Grob area was Pätoprstá Mária. She mastered traditional pre-drawn embroidery, including its pattern and variant forms, for parts of women’s costumes in Veľký Grob.

The Evangelical congregation of Veľký Grob–Čataj commemorates the consecration of the church on the penultimate Sunday in August. The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda is also a recurring part of the village days: in 2022 it was held for the second time and in 2023 for the third time. The 2022 edition featured several disciplines in which the participants’ agricultural skills were put to the test.

Local markets

Several editions of the farmers’ markets were held in the local market square in 2022, 2023 and 2024. They offer a wide selection of producers and growers from Veľký Grob and the surrounding region, as well as a snack stand.

Educational trails and routes

A local educational trail about the history of Veľký Grob runs through the built-up area of the village and includes eight information boards. The Náučný chodník okolo „Rašeliny“ educational trail also runs nearby, following an approximately 3-kilometre route around the Rašelinisko pond. It has four educational boards and one information board containing information about the most important representatives of the nearby fauna and flora, including mammals, fish and birds.

The trail around „Rašeliny“ begins at the „Pod vŕbami“ recreation area. There are seats, a place for roasting food and shelter from strong sunlight. For cyclists, cycle route 2212 runs across fields, past the gravel lake, to Veľký Grob. The Pusté Úľany–Veľký Grob hiking route leads to Veľký Grob.
