Discover Vozokany: Vacation Apartment, Church and Cycling Route 5221

Vozokany combines a long history with remarkable sacred buildings, memorials and a green-marked MTB route. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1297. Water and paths are also part of the local landscape: the Stará Čierna voda watercourse branches off below Čierna Voda and flows through Vozokany.

History and Culture

The focal point is the Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Vozokany. It was built as a larger chapel in 1718. In 1778, a southern side aisle and a masonry tower were added; the new tower replaced the original wooden tower. The church has a main nave and a side aisle, both covered with cross vaults. The side aisle added in 1923 has its own entrance and is locally known as the “small church.”

Two bronze bells from 1922 and 1925 hang in the tower. The smaller bell bears a relief of the Virgin Mary. Beneath the church is a crypt built in 1718, which is not accessible today and contains three burials. One of them is Captain György Ritter from Vozokany, who died in 1732. An organ positive was installed in the choir loft in 1888. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Memorial Sites in the Village

The Roman Catholic Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the local cemetery. It was built in 1925 as a memorial to the victims of the First World War. Other local memorials include the statue of the Holy Family, erected in 1908 by Nagy Ferencz and Nagy Anna, and the Nagykereszt, or Great Cross. Tönköly Dávid and Klimek Anna erected this cross in 1909; a statue of the Virgin Mary stands on its pedestal.

More recent works are also among the visible memorials. The Család Tábor életfája in Vozokany was carved in 2013 by participants in a family camp under the direction of woodcarver Tibor Szatmár. Next to the Catholic church stands the preserved Kopjafa, a local monument. It was erected in 2014 under the direction of woodcarver Tibor Szatmár. The monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars commemorates the local heroes who died in both wars.

Several roadside and park monuments complete this ensemble: at the end of Vozokany in the direction of Tomášikovo stands a roadside statue of Saint Vendelín. A roadside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands by the bridge, and a statue of Saint Florian stands in the park in front of the church.

Nature and Cycling

Route 5221 – Stará Čierna Voda – Tomášikovo – Jahodná is a 12.3-kilometre-long, green-marked and easy recreational MTB route. Its sections run along asphalt, paved paths, and field and forest roads. In Vozokany, Route 5221 reaches the Čierna Voda at the first footbridge and then continues along the edge of the village towards Tomášikovo and Jahodná.

Local Life

The local events calendar includes the sixth and seventh Retro-Gastro Festivals, which took place at the sports or football field. Hody celebrations are held in Vozokany on the feast day of the church’s patron saint. A menu offers international specialties as well as Slovak dishes served with a glass of wine.
