Culture and history

A Neo-Gothic manor house acquired its present appearance in 1861. Romantic elements shape both the façade and the interiors. Its north wing serves as an exhibition pavilion. In Galanta, it houses the Zoltán Kodály memorial room, while the Karol Duchoň memorial room has been arranged as a permanent exhibition. The “Room of Old Gramophones and Shellac Records” from the collection of Kristián Takács is also presented as a permanent exhibition.

A second manor house takes visitors further back into the town’s history: the Renaissance manor house was built around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries by František Esterházy. Today, it houses an exhibition on bourgeois domestic culture from the end of the 19th century. A local history exhibition focuses on the history of Galanta, ranging from the earliest material evidence and written sources through the development of crafts to domestic culture in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Galanta Museum of Local History is also part of the historical picture. It was founded in 1969 with the task of documenting the development of nature and society. To this end, it builds up regional collections, protects, processes and presents them. A particular focus is the history of milling in the catchment area of the Little Danube and along the lower Váh.

The Esterházy princely chapel was built in 1871 and restored in 1998. Inside are an oil painting from the same period entitled “Ukrižovanie” and Baroque stone sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul dating from 1741. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen the King is a monumental, two-towered Classical building with Baroque elements. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar from the Baroque chapel demolished in 1741.

Park and traditions

A historic park surrounds the Neo-Gothic manor house and is considered the largest contiguous green space in Galanta. The park offers opportunities for a short break. Another trace of history is preserved by the Galantské trhy: the market event keeps a tradition dating back to the 17th century alive. Traditional features include a wine road held each year on the grounds of the Neo-Gothic manor house in the town park.

Water and active days

Galandia is a year-round water complex with an indoor swimming pool and four stainless-steel pools. The indoor facilities also include a children’s pool and a water slide. In addition, the Ranč na Striebornom jazere complex offers two lakes where fishing is possible. The grounds also include a themed children’s playground and a riding school.

The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle. From Galanta, cyclists can join the Váh long-distance cycle route in the direction of Kolónia, Váhovce and the Kaskády recreational area. The cycle paths in Galanta run through flat, easy-to-manage terrain and are considered suitable for children and less experienced cyclists.

Wine and regional impressions
