Tužina lies on the southeastern foothills of the Strážov Mountains. The village combines a distinctive landscape setting with a municipal museum and several Baroque religious buildings.

Nature

The Strážov Mountains Protected Landscape Area extends near Tužina. The surrounding forests of Tužina offer visitors opportunities for hiking. The route from Tužina to the characteristic village of Čičmany is also popular with tourists. Numerous forest paths around Tužina are available for mountain biking.

Culture

The municipal museum of Tužina houses a permanent exhibition in a residential building constructed in 1905 and subsequently reconstructed. The museum can be visited year-round, not only seasonally. The exhibition includes objects reconstructed and displayed by Kornélia Richterová herself, as well as objects from other residents of the municipality’s collection.

One of the distinctive buildings is the single-nave Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. James. It was built on medieval foundations between 1788 and 1797 according to plans by the Kremnica builder J. Vogelt. Its furnishings include a main altar, a pulpit, a baptismal font, a four-part organ and four 18th-century chandeliers in the Classical style, featuring richly carved wooden decorations. The church’s interior paintings were restored from 2002 until spring 2007.

At the upper end of Tužina stands the Baroque Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1818. Its Baroque altar features carvings, a Pietà sculpture and two angels from the 18th century. Opposite the church stands the Marian column, built in 1749 in the Late Baroque style. It is surrounded by an artistically carved marble wall, was completely reconstructed by the academic sculptor Dušan Hagara and reconsecrated in 1999.

Events

The Tužina Gro(o)ve programme included workshops, lectures, a travel cinema, the Gro(o)ve Market craft and handmade market, as well as programmes for children. In Tužina, the second Sunday in September is celebrated as Hody in remembrance of the church’s consecration. The 11th edition of the multi-genre festival of alternative music Tužina Gro(o)ve was scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 July 2026 in the Hatalisko natural area in Tužina.
