Kanianka combines water, mountain landscapes and distinctive religious sites. Swimming and various water sports are possible at the Kanianka Reservoir; its surroundings are also suitable for cycling, running and walking. West of Kanianka, the Malá Magura rises steeply and belongs to the Strážovské vrchy mountain range. The Kaniansky dvojkríž stands at the highest point of the municipality’s cadastral area. A hiking ascent there, as well as a cycling ascent, is organised.

Culture and history

The original settlement core of Kanianka is known as “stara Kanianka”. It lies in the valley of the Kanianskeho potok and still features traditional linear development along the stream.

In the centre of the village stands the Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the main church of the Kanianka parish. Its free-standing bell tower is characteristic. The foundation stone was blessed by John Paul II on 22 April 1990, construction began in May 1992, and the church was consecrated on 7 November 1993.

The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is another significant historic sacred building in Kanianka. It was built in 1902 thanks to Štefan Baláž; the first Holy Mass was celebrated there on 14 September 1902. Holy Masses are currently celebrated in the chapel on Saturdays, every week in summer and once a month in winter.

Faith and traditional forms

A quiet place of prayer is the Stations of the Cross in Kanianka, at the foot of the mountain above the new cemetery. It comprises fourteen stations marked by large stones. Alongside the churches and the chapel, the route thus serves as a separate religious site in the village’s surroundings.

Traditional clothing and handicrafts are also among Kanianka’s named cultural forms. Earlier generations in Kanianka wore traditional costume mainly on ceremonial occasions, such as weddings or church visits. Some female residents also describe a distinctive Kanianka embroidery with floral motifs, worked either in chain stitch or as full embroidery.
