Holiday apartment in Cigeľ: cross-country skiing and mining

Cigeľ lies at the northwestern foot of the Vtáčnik Mountains, in a valley carved out by the Ciglianka stream. When there is sufficient snow cover, around 40 km of cross-country ski trails are available in Cigeľ. This creates very different ways to experience this Slovak town, from mountain landscapes and winter sports to local history and mining.

Nature

The immediate surroundings of Cigeľ include Jančekova Skala and Biela Skala, both mountains. Veľký Gryč and Malý Gryč, also mountains, are located nearby. One specifically named hiking route is route P1 of the Pochod vďaky SNP. It leads from Cigeľ via Biely kameň back to Cigeľ, is 13 km long, has an elevation gain of 668 m and is of medium difficulty.

Winter sports

The Cigeľ ski area has an elevation difference of 195 m. The base station is located at 630 m, while the highest point of the ski area is at 825 m. In addition, around 40 km of cross-country ski trails are available when there is sufficient snow cover, meaning that in winter both the ski area and the trail network are among the specifically named attractions in the town.

Culture and history

The Izba ľudových a revolučných tradícií is located in a former family home. It brings together written and photographic material on the development of the municipality from the beginning of this century to the present day. It also contains extensive material on the origins and course of the Slovak National Uprising in Cigeľ and the Vtáčnik Mountains.

The Kostol sv. Matúša church in Cigeľ was built in 1762 on the site of a wooden church. It was reconstructed in 1912, and the tower was added in 1939. The churches of Púšť and Svätý Vendelín are also located in the surroundings of Cigeľ. Further afield in the region are the ruins of Šášov and Zniev.

Mining

Baňa Cigeľ is located in the vicinity of Cigeľ, in the cadastral area of the municipality of Sebedražie. Some of its rooms serve as a mining museum, combined with the opportunity to go underground. The tour of the Hornonitrianskeho banského skanzenu Baňa Cigeľ begins in the vicinity of Cigeľ with a 2,312-metre journey by mine railway into a lignite mine. It then continues with a 566-metre walk at a minimum depth of 80 metres below the surface through underground mine workings in the former Section II of the mining area.
