Holiday apartment in Malinová: Trails, Gold Traces and Folk Architecture

Malinová is a foothill municipality situated in a deforested hilly landscape with numerous alluvial fans. The forests consist of fir and beech stands, locally complemented by pine and spruce. Between this landscape and the traces of the village’s history emerges a multifaceted picture that combines nature trails, mining history and rural building culture.

Culture

Roboty, also known as Kamenné moria, are a lasting testimony to the historic gold mining in Malinová. The 2.5-kilometre nature trail leads to these striking accumulations of stones. It begins in the village centre at the bus stop, runs through the village and the forest, and ends at the edge of extensive meadows at the foot of the Strážovské vrchy. Large orchards once stood where the meadows are now. The forest section is varied but not difficult and is also suitable for children.

Another historic site is the partisan bunker near Malinová. It is a reconstructed representation of a Second World War bunker that partisans of the Ernest Thälmann unit built in 1944. After its second restoration in 2018, an information board was installed there briefly explaining the partisan resistance and the history of Malinová. The route to the bunker is signposted from the bus stop with a tourist information board and then with wooden direction arrows. The marked route begins at the bus stop in the village, is 6.65 km long and has an elevation gain of 414 m. It is suitable for children and less demanding hikers and can be used for hiking and cycling. From the partisan bunker, visitors can continue along the route to the summit of Magura at an altitude of 1,141 m. The municipality of Malinová and the local organisation of the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters regularly organise commemorative marches to the jointly restored partisan bunker.

The folk architecture typical of Malinová includes residential houses, agricultural outbuildings, mills, mining structures, bell towers, wayside shrines and bridges. The Mlynský kameň is a preserved relic of a former mill where flour was ground for the entire village. Gold mining is also associated with specific historical details: at the beginning of the 17th century, there were gold mines in Malinová, and approximately 700 g of gold dust was extracted in 1648. On the altar of the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary there is a folk-style Pietà dating from the period when the chapel was built.
