Poruba: Cultural Monument, Mill and Magura Ascent

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Poruba is a national cultural monument dating from the late 13th or early 14th century. It is also considered a rare example of a fortified medieval rural sacred building complex with a cemetery. Near the enclosure of the Church of Saint Nicholas, eleven old lime trees stand on the inside and outside; they are estimated to be around 550 years old and are among the protected trees.

Culture

A second cultural and historical landmark is the mill in Poruba, which was built predominantly of wood and has two storeys. The building still contains features that recall the milling trade; at the same time, it is one of two original mills that have survived in Poruba. The mill ceased operation in the 1950s or 1960s. Today, it is an unused, partially inhabited building.

Poruba’s cultural side is also reflected in the Children’s Folklore Day, which includes children’s games, rhymes, dances, songs, carnival customs, spring games and other traditional customs and traditions. The DFS Kapsiarik children’s folklore ensemble was founded in 2003 at the Poruba municipal office and worked to revive the tradition of carrying out Morena and carnival customs. Children’s Folklore Day usually takes place in Poruba or Nedožery-Brezany.

You can view these cultural attractions in three ways: as a medieval sacred building, as evidence of the milling trade and as a collection of traditional children’s and carnival customs. The buildings and event therefore place different emphasis on different aspects, so cultural interests are not reduced to a single theme.

Routes

The traditional ascent from the municipalities to Magura has been held for almost two decades and brings hundreds of participants to the summit of Magura every year. The ascent begins at Urbárska krčma in Poruba. The route from Poruba to Magura is approximately 6.8 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 723 metres. Activities

In the vicinity of Prievidza, the Poruba ski resort is one of the ski areas sought out by tourists. There are two direct SAD bus connections to the ski resort; alternatively, a bus stop is located 1.5 kilometres from the ski resort. Poruba also has a ranch with horses. The options mentioned differ considerably: the Magura Ascent is defined by a fixed route with elevation gain, while the ski resort is characterised by direct SAD bus connections and an alternative bus-stop option.
