Holiday apartment in Poluvsie – Culture and Nature in the Upper Nitra Basin

Poluvsie lies together with the neighboring municipalities in the Upper Nitra Basin and is surrounded by mountain ranges and hills on almost all sides. The Nitra flows through the municipality; the smaller Lubená stream also crosses Poluvsie, originating from Zadný diel Mountain.

Culture and History

The Lubená folklore group performs traditional songs, dances, and customs. Every year, Poluvsie hosts the Jozef Strečanský memorial event in honor of this collector and folklorist. At the “V poluskej dedine” folklore festival, visitors can take part in a dance school and try traditional crafts in creative workshops. Regional specialties prepared by local housewives are also available.

The built heritage includes the “Števke” dwelling house, which has been preserved as a national cultural monument. It is a simple through-passage house with a lowered attic that was used to store grain or goods sensitive to moisture. The façade features a row of small windows aligned axially with the windows of the living floor.

The church in Poluvsie has also been preserved as a national cultural monument. It was built on the site of an earlier 4 × 4 meter Marian chapel and preserves the altar from that former chapel.

Nature and Waters

The Nitra shapes the municipality just as much as the Lubená stream. Fishing takes place in the old riverbed of the Nitra in Poluvsie; the site is visited relatively frequently by anglers. The local marsh is a wetland habitat with various, partly rare plant species and frogs. Fishing also takes place there, and in winter the area serves as a hockey rink.

Poluvsie is also a traditional fruit-growing region with a long-standing tradition of apple cultivation.

Transport

Road I/64, connecting Komárno–Nitra–Prievidza–Žilina, links Poluvsie to the higher-level transport network. It connects the Ponitrie region with northern Slovakia, the Turiec region, and the upper Váh area.
