Zemianske Kostoľany lies on the banks of the Nitra River. To the west, the town is bordered by the southern foothills of Malá Magura, and to the east by the ridges of Vtáčnik. Historic buildings can be found in the town.

Landscape

Its location on the Nitra connects Zemianske Kostoľany with a river landscape bordered on one side by the southern foothills of Malá Magura and on the other by the ridges of Vtáčnik. Both landscape features form part of the town’s immediate geographical description: Malá Magura lies to the west, while Vtáčnik lies to the east. Manor houses and historic architecture

One of the town’s defining historic buildings is the Renesančný kaštieľ. It was built around 1570, later remodelled, and has preserved typical Renaissance elements. The Renesančný kaštieľ also includes a publicly accessible Renaissance park. Another manor house is the Karolkin kaštieľ, which was built in the Renaissance style in the first half of the 17th century and remodelled at the end of the 19th century.

The Kišasonkin kaštieľ was built in 1727. In 1818, the building was extended upwards before being converted in 1836 into an Empire-style villa with an open columned loggia. The Obytná veža was built around 1570 and, with the exception of the Dolné Lelovce district, is the oldest building in Zemianske Kostoľany. It originally served as a residential tower, an unusual function for this type of building.

The Jožičkina kúria also represents a specific historic building and residential tradition. It is considered a typical example of the traditional residential form of the lower nobility. Various types of vaulting have been preserved in the single-storey building, including barrel, lunette, Prussian and groin vaults. In the wider Upper Nitra area, several manor houses – including those in Zemianske Kostoľany – are regarded as evidence of the region’s rich history.

Churches

The town’s religious buildings complement this historic picture with different periods and styles. The Roman Catholic Church of sv. Jána Krstiteľa was built in 1699–1701 in the Pseudo-Renaissance and early Baroque styles. The Church of Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie in the Dolné Lelovce district of Zemianske Kostoľany has Romanesque origins dating from the 12th century to the first half of the 13th century.

Permission to build the Evangelical articulated church in Zemianske Kostoľany was granted in 1734; it was consecrated in 1736. An old cemetery surrounds the Evangelical church in Zemianske Kostoľany. Thus, churches with Romanesque, early Baroque, Pseudo-Renaissance and Evangelical articulated features stand side by side in the town and the Dolné Lelovce district.
