Handlová combines cultural history, mining and routes into the surrounding landscape to create a diverse townscape. Among exhibitions, historic buildings, technical heritage and marked routes, you will encounter different facets of the town, which are particularly tangible in its museums and places of remembrance.
Culture
The "History and Culture of Handlová" exhibition presents the history and culture of the Germans living in Handlová. It also introduces visitors to the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová through archaeological artefacts. Mining tools document the extraction of lignite there. Another part of the exhibition covers the history of coal mining in Handlová from the beginnings of industrial mining in 1909 to 1945.
Handlová's historical heritage also includes the Banícka kolónia. It was built as a residential district for miners from throughout the former monarchy who came to Handlová to work. A notable religious building is the Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej church. It dates from the mid-14th century and is considered the oldest building in Handlová.
Mining and landscape
The Slovenské Banské Múzeum Handlová is housed in a renovated building from 1913 that originally served as a miners' hotel. At the museum, visitors can experience a replica of underground spaces depicting coal mining from manual methods to mechanised extraction at the beginning of the 20th century. The building also contains the so-called EKO dielnička. It provides space for extracurricular education, meaningful creative leisure activities and creative activities for all age groups.
The Banský náučný chodník is accessible year-round. Its green-marked trail connects with a yellow-marked trail to the summit of Malý Grič and a red-marked trail to the summit of Veľký Grič. Both summits offer beautiful views of Handlová. Along the educational trail, visitors can also learn about activities connected with coal mining in Handlová, as well as the fauna and flora of the surrounding area.
Trails
Another marked connection is the Cesta na Remäta route. It starts at Námestie baníkov and follows the yellow-marked trail. It passes the post office and the services centre before continuing to a car park, crossing a bridge over a stream and then ascending along 1. mája Street to the municipal swimming pool. There, the route joins Pstruhárska Street.
History
Handlová is also connected with railway history. The railway line, including the railway viaduct at its lower end, was completed in 1913. The Bralský tunel, also called Tunel T. G. Masaryka, forms part of a railway line built towards Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s and is 3.0116 km long.
