Šútovce lies where the Malá Magura transitions into the Nitrica foothills of the Upper Nitra Basin. The village is also located along the upper course of the Trebiansky potok. The landscape’s character is particularly evident on the trails across the Šútovské sedlo: from there, marked hiking trails lead to the summit of Boškovho laz at 935 m and to Magura at an elevation of 1,141.3 m.
Landscape
The location between the mountain edge and the basin landscape defines Šútovce’s geographical setting. A marked hiking trail can be accessed via the Šútovské sedlo. The saddle can be reached from a bus stop in Šútovce in about 20 minutes on foot through the forest. Another connection is the Rokošská radiála, which descends steeply from the Šútovské sedlo to Šútovce.
Culture and history
Šútovce is a manorial settlement dating from the 12th century. The present-day municipality was established in 1922 through the merger of Horné Šútovce and Dolné Šútovce. Several small religious buildings preserve traces from different periods: the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Dolné Šútovce dates from 1908, while the Marian Chapel in Horné Šútovce dates from 1920. The small Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built before 1900 and is the oldest of the chapels in Šútovce.
The cultural centre also bears witness to the local past. It is a former local elementary school, built before 1900, probably around 1890. Horné Šútovce is also associated with an agricultural tradition: historically, the village was known for extensive fruit growing, especially cherries.
Trails and routes
The Pálfyho trail runs through Šútovce for a distance of 1.02 km. The Pálfyho trail itself is listed as being 4.4 km long; it is managed by Hornonitrianske stopy. A second named route is the Bojnicko - Dubnický okruh, which runs through Šútovce for 687 m. Together with the Rokošská radiála and the marked trails across the Šútovské sedlo, these routes form a network of connections and elevation destinations described in different ways.
Local events
In Šútovce, Čerešňové slávnosti are listed for June 6, 2024, and April 22, 2026. The name refers to the regional feature that is also reflected in the historical importance of cherry growing in Horné Šútovce.
