The present-day Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary (Kaplnka Nepoškvrneného počatia Panny Márie) was built in 1894. The cultural side of Dolné Vestenice is also reflected in wood art, customs and local traditions.

Culture

Since 1998, the wooden nativity scene (Drevený betlehem) has been a permanent feature on the grounds of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary during every Christmas season. It includes life-size figures of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary made of linden wood. The figures were carved by woodcarvers Pavol Zmrhlala and Milan Vysoký from Ďurčina near Rajec. The combination of a sacred site, a seasonal nativity tradition and craftsmanship gives this cultural detail a clearly recognizable character of its own.

Customs

Local traditions include the Dolnovestenické hody, a traditional summer festival associated with the name day of Saint James. At the Dolnovestenické hody on July 24, 2022, goulash and other refreshments were offered.

History

The local fruit-growing tradition dates back a long way: fruit has been grown in Dolné Vestenice since the 15th century; at the beginning of the 19th century, fruit sales increased significantly.

Nature

The Vestenická medvedia jaskyňa is located above the Hradištnica valley, is 41 m long and 13 m deep. The cave is a natural monument and normally remains closed to the public to protect rare sinter formations and bats hibernating there; however, an expert-guided tour is possible annually on July 5. Its location, dimensions and special protection status are therefore closely interconnected.

The Predviničie locality is an interesting year-round area for people interested in flora and fauna. Among other species, it is home to the Eurasian hoopoe, common kestrel, eastern imperial eagle and European green woodpecker, as well as thermophilic insects. These species give the natural area a distinct zoological and botanical character.

Hiking

As part of the annual celebrations, a hike to Hradištnica traditionally takes place. In the surroundings of Dolné Vestenice, a hike around Jankovho vŕška is also recommended.
