Horná Streda – Váh, Lake and Cycling Route

Horná Streda lies on the right bank of the Váh and in a foothill of the Danubian Lowland. Most of the cadastral area of Horná Streda belongs to the geomorphological unit of Dolnovážska niva, while the easternmost part belongs to the geomorphological unit of Považský Inovec. The cadastral area lies within the Váh river basin. Its spatial setting is therefore defined by the riverside location, a lowland foothill and two named geomorphological units alongside one another.

Nature and Landscape

There is a natural lake in the cadastral area of Horná Streda. Horná Streda has a small recreational complex by a lake with snack bars and a beach. The lake and the complex form a distinct water-focused area, while the cycling route can be considered a separate activity theme. When planning a day between a riverside landscape, time by the water and exercise, visitors can weigh these focuses independently of one another.

Cycling

A cycling route passes through Horná Streda. The Horná Streda–Nové Mesto nad Váhom cycling route begins at the border between the Trnava and Trenčín regions in the municipality of Horná Streda. It is 13.4 km long and up to 3 m wide, and runs along the crest of the flood protection embankment on the Váh. The route has a recreational difficulty level and is suitable for all age groups, including children. Thanks to its special surface, it is also intended for inline skaters. It offers views of the castles of Tematín, Čachtice and Beckov.

Length, width, difficulty level and surface provide different points of comparison for an active day. Families with children can take the explicitly stated age suitability into account, while inline skaters can incorporate the intended use of the special surface into their planning. Depending on their individual focus, visitors can therefore view the route from different activity perspectives.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints was originally Baroque and was built in 1728 on the site of a Gothic church dating from 1353. In 1924, the church was completely rebuilt and extended with a transept. The first written mention of Horná Streda dates from 1263; at that time, the place was referred to as Sceredahel. The area of Horná Streda had already been settled since the time of Great Moravia.

The local history also includes Jozef Marek: the veterinarian was born in Horná Streda in 1868. A memorial plaque for Jozef Marek was unveiled in 1988 on the occasion of his 120th birthday. Alongside the building itself, the early name of the place, its settlement history and the commemoration of a person born in Horná Streda thus represent distinct historical points of reference.
