Holiday apartment in Hrachovište: Route 17 and the Little Carpathians

Hrachovište lies in the foothills of the Little Carpathians below the summit of Plešivec. Route 17 offers a concrete connection between the landscape and the route: it leads from Nové Mesto nad Váhom via Višňové and Čachtice Castle to Hrachovište. The route is 18 km long, moderately difficult, has 650 metres of elevation gain and takes about five hours.

Hiking

On its further course, Route 17 leads from Veľký Plešivec down to Hrachovište through rocky cliffs. It follows the Jablonka stream and crosses the water on a new covered wooden bridge. The length, elevation gain and duration provide the tour with a clear framework, while the route over Plešivec, through the cliffs and along the stream connects the landscape in several forms.

Landscape

Hrachovište lies in a valley at the confluence of the Jablonka and Turanka streams. The area has a diverse geological composition and complex structural conditions. The Čachtice Carpathians are home to thermophilic Pannonian oak forests and xerothermic open-land habitats. The Hrachovište area also includes various underground cavities, where fossils of marine animals can also be found. The valley, streams, rock formations, geological structures and different habitats thus stand alongside one another without being reduced to a single landscape image.

Culture

A local legend traces the name Hrachovište and the municipal coat of arms with its three roses back to King Matthias and pea porridge. In the past, basket weaving was also widespread in Hrachovište alongside agriculture. After 1918, in addition to traditional activities, residents earned money by making hemp linen at home.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, “Kostol Návštevy Panny Márie”, is located in Hrachovište. It is a Baroque Roman Catholic church dating from 1757 and is recognised as a cultural monument. It was built in 1750–1756 as a single-nave church with a polygonally closed presbytery, an adjoining sacristy and a projecting tower. The main altar is late Baroque with Empire elements from the early 19th century and features a polychrome relief of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in the centre.

Getting there

Hrachovište railway station is not in operation; however, trains stop there, and tickets are purchased from the conductor. The train connection to Hrachovište is not direct. At Nové Mesto nad Váhom, a change to the Nové Mesto–Trenčín line is required.
