Kálnica is located in the northwest of the Považský Inovec mountain range and encompasses the Vysoký Inovec and Inovecké predhorie landscape subregions. The Vysoký Inovec area has a particularly strong influence on the terrain: here, a highly varied mountain relief can be seen, with relative differences in elevation ranging from 311 to 640 metres. As a result, the landscape within the area ranges from distinctive terrain formations to pronounced mountain ridges.

Landscape

The highest point in the Kálnica area is Ostrý vrch, also known as Vtáčí vŕštek. It reaches an elevation of 910 metres and lies on the main ridge of the Považský Inovec. This mountain has a viewing terrace with carved information boards about the surrounding Považie region. Since 2011, the ascent to the Slovanský dvojkríž on Ostrý vrch has also taken the form of a star-shaped hiking route.

Hiking

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Kálnica via Polámaný vrch to the ridge of the Považský Inovec. Panská Javorina can also be climbed from Kálnica in about 3.5 hours. A more extensive option is Route 09: it leads from Kálnica via Panská Javorina and Ostrý vrch back to Kálnica, is 23.5 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes about 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Route 09 begins and ends in Kálnica. Its starting point is at the Piesky ski resort on the outskirts of Kálnica. This circular route therefore connects the mountain points mentioned above in a single trail whose starting and finishing area is the same place.

Mountain Biking

The Piesky centre serves as a centre for mountain bikers in summer. It has a lift and an obstacle course for downhill runs. The Kálnica Bike Park offers 14 MTB disciplines; there is also a floodlit area for evening riding.

The Kálnica Bike Park offers rides by arrangement with experienced instructors, a cycling school for children, a cycling school and bike camps.

Culture and History

The history of Kálnica can also be seen in several different places. The Kňažia valley contains the ruins of the Pod Hromovým monastery, which has not yet been definitively identified. Kálnica also has an exhibition on the history of the former Daranský Mill, which has since been demolished. Jozef Miloslav Hurban is also associated with this place, as he visited his godparents there.

The former church school and the Evangelical prayer house in Kálnica were consecrated on 22 September 1946. A bell tower was built in Kálnica between 1959 and 1960, and a community room was added in 1968. A permanent ethnographic exhibition was also established to mark the 600th anniversary.

A freely accessible tourist shelter offers overnight accommodation. The log cabin has a small stove, and there is a drinking-water spring nearby.
