Nové Mesto nad Váhom combines historical monuments, a local history museum, a fair and an opened cycle section. The Podjavorinské múzeum is located in a Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century. The building bears the names Gilániho dom and “Gilániovec” and houses a local history exhibition on the history of Nové Mesto nad Váhom and its surrounding area, as well as their culture and traditions.
History
Several eras stand side by side in the cityscape. A lower section of a tower and a stone portal have survived from a Romanesque basilica dating from the middle of the 13th century. At the same site, Augustinians built a new Gothic central church with an octagonal floor plan between 1414 and 1423. The surviving parts of the older basilica thus meet the later church building, whose floor plan displays its own architectural form. The dates and the different architectural forms place the historical points of reference in chronological order without merging them into a single building history.
Events
The Aničky Jurkovičovej Festival is a recurring event in the cultural calendar. The 27th edition is scheduled for the period from 12 to 14 April 2026. The festival included an international competition featuring amateur theatres. For this event, both the chronological classification of the edition and the format of the event are therefore established: The April date identifies the edition, while the competition describes its main focus.
Cycling and Water
For cyclists, the Horná Streda–Nové Mesto nad Váhom section of the Vážska cyklomagistrála has been opened for public use. Zelená voda in the nearby area has a seasonal connection: During the 2026 summer season, visitors can use beaches there with services. There is also free access to the water at Rybársky dom. The cycle section, seasonal beaches and access to the water are therefore separate points of reference and can be considered independently when planning a day trip.
Market and Cellar
The history of the market dates back to the granting of market rights. Under these rights, Nové Mesto nad Váhom was allowed to hold up to seven fairs over the course of a year. The Novomestský jarmok offers fairground specialities, refreshments and stalls selling folk handicrafts. Food, drinks and handicrafts each form separate focal points of the market activity. Beneath Námestie Slobody, a restored underground passage also houses a wine cellar. There is no unrestricted access to this wine cellar.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, travel dates, apartment size and cancellation conditions can help structure the selection. Alongside the town’s cultural attractions, these details are relevant to the accommodation decision. Depending on your own plans, the three characteristics can be weighted differently: The dates concern the period, the size the type of living space, and the conditions the preferred accommodation framework for your stay.
