Hrádok combines a Baroque church, significant archaeological traces and several routes to Tematín Castle. The history of the village extends far beyond its first documented mention: at Hradisko Hrádok, evidence from the Eneolithic and Bronze Age meets traces of medieval fortifications. This historical profile is complemented by a geomorphological landscape in the middle Považie region and marked trails for mountain biking and hiking.

Culture

Hrádok is home to the Baroque-Classical Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in 1729 on the site of an older church. Its main altar dates from 1779. The church therefore preserves two clearly dated elements of its architectural and furnishing history.

History

Settlement and fortification traces from the Eneolithic period, as well as further evidence from the Early Bronze Age, have been documented at Hradisko Hrádok, including traces of the Maďarovce culture. Hradisko was settled again in the Early Middle Ages. Slavic inhabitants renewed older fortification systems; settlement continued until the 12th century.

Hrádok was first mentioned in 1246 and belonged to the domain of Tematín Castle. A medieval fortification stood on the western outskirts of the village, at a site known as Hradište. It was probably built in the 13th century on the foundations of a much older fortification. Hrádok is also known for a mass find of iron, axe-shaped bars dating from the Great Moravian period, described as the largest on the territory of Czechoslovakia.

Hradisko Hrádok is a multi-layered archaeological site in a strategically advantageous location. From there, it was possible to control a longer section of a prehistoric route through a pass in the Little Carpathians. Its geographical setting is therefore directly connected to the recorded history of the site.

Routes

MTB route 5304 from Hrádok via Tematín and Ihelník is 10.9 kilometres long and moderately difficult. It starts in Hrádok, passes through the locality of Ihelník and Tematín Castle, and ends back in Hrádok. The route is therefore a circular route with the same place as its starting and ending point.

From Hrádok’s Dolina district, the marked access route to Tematín Castle covers 3.9 kilometres with an ascent of approximately 340 metres. Bus connections to the starting point of this access route in the Dolina district are very sporadic or entirely unavailable.

A longer hiking connection is Route 06 from Ducové via Kostolec, Lúka and Tematín Castle to Hrádok. It is 20 kilometres long and moderately difficult. Route 06 has an elevation gain of 912 metres and takes 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Nature

The geomorphological formation in the middle Považie region was created by the activity of the Váh River. It documents the development of the Váh Valley after the Pleistocene glaciation.
