Holiday apartment in Valaská Dubová – Choč trails and church art

Valaská Dubová combines marked trails into the Chočské vrchy mountains with a remarkable church and local history. From the village, trails ascend to Stredná Poľana and onward towards Veľký Choč; at the same time, the church, Lourdes chapel and Jánošíkova krčma tell of different periods and traditions.

Nature

In good visibility, Veľký Choč offers panoramic views of all the surrounding higher mountain ranges of the Western Carpathians. A trail from Valaská Dubová to Stredná Poľana passes through the Chočské vrchy Bird Protection Area. The landscape can be experienced not only on hiking trails: a green-marked cycle route also runs through Valaská Dubová.

Hiking

The trail from Valaská Dubová to Stredná Poľana is designated as Route 2700, Part 1, and marked in blue. Along this route, the trail climbs approximately 600 metres and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. It starts at the “Valaská Dubová,,OcÚ” bus stop; regional buses from Ružomberok run to the starting point. The trail is accessible year-round.

Another blue-marked ascent from Valaská Dubová leads via Soliská to Poľana. This ascent takes about 2.5 hours and continues towards Veľký Choč. On the last day of each year, a traditional New Year’s Eve summit ascent to Veľký Choč also takes place from Valaská Dubová. The two ascents therefore have different named intermediate points: one leads to Stredná Poľana, while the other goes via Soliská to Poľana and onward towards Veľký Choč.

Southwest of Valaská Dubová, above the main road from Ružomberok to Dolný Kubín, there is a swing hanging from trees. From there, views extend across the surroundings of Valaská Dubová; the swing can be reached from the cemetery via a path in about 15 minutes.

History

The present-day Church of St Michael the Archangel was built after the previous church was demolished in 1860 and was consecrated in 1866. Its interior paintings date from 1904 and were created by Jozef Hanula. Next to the church stands a Lourdes chapel, built to mark the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes.

The history of the parish also reaches far back: the parish of Valaská Dubová is first mentioned in a record from 1332–1337. Another historical landmark is Jánošíkova krčma, a brick building constructed on the site of an older wooden inn.
