Liptovské Revúce and the Revúcka Valley define the geographical setting: the valley runs from north to south and forms the boundary between the Low Tatras and the Great Fatra. The Revúca River rises below Krížna, flows through the Revúcka Valley and joins the Váh in Ružomberok.
Geographical Setting
The landscape includes the Prielom Teplého potoka gorge section. It is approximately 180 metres long and up to 20 metres deep, featuring karst formations, travertine and erosional features created by the river. The protected area also includes the 2.4-metre-high lower waterfall of the Teplý potok. Prielom Teplého potoka has been a protected natural monument since 1984, located in the Teplá Valley within the cadastral area of Liptovské Revúce. It can be reached from the Teplé forest lodge via a yellow-marked hiking trail.
Borišov is a 450-hectare state nature reserve that protects communities across up to four forest vegetation levels. The trail from Ploská leads to Chata pod Borišovom, a mountain hut open year-round at a junction of several marked hiking trails.
Hiking Trails
The Čierny Kameň educational trail begins in Stredná in Liptovské Revúce and ends in Vyšná near Konštrukta; along the way, it passes through the NPR Čierny kameň nature reserve and over the Ploská saddle. The trail is 9.5 kilometres long, takes approximately five hours and includes eight information boards or stations. It is self-guided, can be walked in both directions and is suitable as a loop trail in summer and winter. The educational trail can be reached from the SAD bus stop Liptovské Revúce, Stredná–požiarna zbrojnica.
The route from Liptovské Revúce (Výšné) to Krížna is 15 kilometres long and takes six hours. It is classified as a moderately difficult alpine hike and ski touring route. For ski touring, it is designated for use from 15 December to 30 April; avalanche safety equipment is specified as necessary gear. In Záhorovo in Liptovské Revúce, Ferrata Dve veže was also opened as a secured route through demanding mountain terrain with fixed safety cables and iron steps.
Culture
Vyšná Revúca is the oldest part of the municipality and preserves its best-preserved folk architecture. This includes wooden houses dating from 1800 to 1870 and an 18th-century chapel. The folk culture of Liptovské Revúce, shaped by shepherding, is known as Ovenálie and has remained almost unchanged to this day.
A characteristic embroidery tradition of Liptovské Revúce is the sewn lace, or openwork embroidery, known as “garatová ruža”. Sacred architecture includes the Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, “Kostol Očisťovania Panny Márie”. It was built in 1819 in the Baroque Classicist style on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1694. Inside, it features a wall painting from 1912–1913 by Jozef Hanula and a Classicist high altar dating from around 1820.
Traditions
The traditional ascent of Borišov takes place every year on 30 December. Another local tradition is Revúcke halušky, which for 28 years has been associated with craft markets, folklore, music, regional food, children's activities and a competition to cook and eat bryndza halušky.
Other Places
Other places to explore include Valaská Dubová, Ivachnova, Kalameny, Liptovská Štiavnica, Stankovany, Liptovská Lúžna, Liptovská Teplá and Likavka.
